March 20 is the annual observance of National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NNHAAD). The day highlights the impact of HIV among Native populations, be they American Indian, Native Hawaiian, or Alaska Natives. This year's #NNHAAD theme is “Unity in CommUnity, Stand Strong to Prevent HIV.” You do not want HIV, but if you have it, it is much better to know you are HIV-positive so you can seek treatment and get back to living a happy, healthy, life. it’s important for people who are HIV-negative to value their HIV status so they protect themselves and are smart when it comes to HIV prevention. On the other hand, you don’t want people to fear HIV as the death sentence it was in the 80s and 90s so they don’t avoid HIV tests and people openly living with HIV all together, especially when more than half of young gay men who are HIV-positive are unaware of their status. Today March 20 is #NatlNativeHIVAidsAwarenessDay
By the end of 2010, an estimated 1,945 American Indians/Alaska Natives with an AIDS diagnosis had died in the United States. In 2010, HIV infection was the ninth leading cause of death among AI/AN aged 25 to 34.
Today, March 20 is National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Help raise awareness, fight stigma and learn more about the epidemic in these communities.
