File identification tools, part 8: NLNZ Metadata Extraction Tool

The name of the NLNZ (National Library of New Zealand) Metadata Extraction Tool suggests getting metadata more than identifying files, FITS uses it as part of its set of format identification tools. It employs a set of adapters to access the following file formats: BMP, GIF, JPEG TIFF, MS Word, Word Perfect, Open Office, MS Works, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, PDF, WAV, MP3, BWF, FLAC, HTML, XML, and…

Have you ever wanted to learn what these computer programmers get up to? Here is your chance to get a small glimpse into what is possible by working through a series of interesting projects that bring together two concepts: "websites as data" and "digital preservation".

Here are some of the things that we'll get up to:

Learn how computers interpret numbers, text, images and other data

Create a comprehensive backup of a website

Process a miniature web harvest, using the standards that the Internet Archive uses

Extracting places and dates from websites

Turn Captain James Cook's journal into an interactive website

Provide pointers to further topics such as,

mobile app development, and

data visualisation

About the tutor

During the day, Tim works at the New Zealand eScience Infrastructure connecting researchers with technology. In his spare time, he likes to explore what is possible with text analysis and natural language processing. As a self-taught programmer who learned to code to assist communities to recover from disasters, he has a long-held view that programming can deliver tremendous social good.

Who should come?

Anyone interested, but particularly people interested in learning about technology and who are relatively self-directed.

Catering

The event is not catered. Please bring your own lunch or make use of one of the lovely Thorndon cafés.

What to bring

There are two rules for attendees:

bring a laptop

be well behaved

You will not need to install anything as we will be running everything through an Internet browser.

Cost

$30, although free admission can be arranged by discussion. Free! Thanks Internet NZ for a community grant to cover my travel expenses and National Library for hosting the venue.
