Ultimately... Both of the video games for NiNoKuni are vastly better than the movie. It's a bit contrived and cliche, but in a bit way that doesn't feel classic or long standing. It says more than it shows. Time was spent on unimportant things instead of teasing narrative points, or developing characters.
Haru, by the end never grew from the first criticism given to him five minutes into the movie. Yu was continually was shit on in both worlds and made choices you would expect if a protagonist, but only when meeting an old hero again was given any credit.
It takes place in Evermore so it takes place After NiNoKuni2. But the old man felt more like Oliver, than Evan.
Had the narrative followed a plot far closer to either of the games it would have been stronger. Instead we got a world jumping love triangle (square) that actually ends up just being two identical couples. The compelling conflict of best friends fighting against each other over a base difference in belief of how the parallel worlds work was not delved into and honestly, made the entire sequence of them fighting stupid. It was so readily fixed before any consequences could occur....
The NiNoKuni YouTube movies of the video game > the movie. The games a ghibliesque experiences into magical wonder, and this movie is a shadow imitation, traced in crayon into a crumpled paper. The orchestrations had the classic theme songs. The world has whimsy and wonder. But it always cut short before doing anything with it. It was fascinating to see the kingdom of Evermore, but having played the game I knew what I was looking for and at. The movie, did not give that feeling of being in a new world. Rich and fascinating in it's culture and history

Me, replaying the game: Alright I’m just gonna enjoy this game and NOT get into the fandom again. I won’t fall for that a thrid time.
Me, 5 minutes into the game: Where do I sign the fuck up
