#nikonos

I recently wrote an essay for cizucu about my Nikonos, a camera I've been taking into the ocean for years. It breaks, I find another one, and take it back into the sea. This essay is about my ongoing relationship with the Nikonos and why I keep coming back to it. If you're interested, I'd be happy if you gave it a read.

Baja is another planet. Maybe even three, four different worlds mushed together in the same way toddlers combine various colors of Play-Doh. Skillfully dodging potholes and tourist traps, it doesn’t take long to reach wide open spaces. The desolation allows for vast views of beautiful landscape unobstructed by human-made distractions.

People, like the variation in the flora, can be quite different from one region to the next - a few are looking to tax you, most others ecstatic to share what they have.

The peninsula is hugged by two bountiful coasts. The east provides a plethora of sea life to harvest for dinner, the west offers waves as uncrowded as one cares to surf.

In between are jagged mountain peaks reaching 10,000+ feet into the clouds. Spikey, swirly Boojum trees, towering cacti and teetering boulders decorate a desert as trippy as a Dr. Seuss setting.
