Atsuko Okatsuka is a Japanese-Taiwanese comedian who lived as an undocumented child in California until the age of 7. You can learn more about her childhood here.
Latino and Black communities were some of the few places in LA that allowed Nikkei folks to resettle after WWII internment. These communities became convenient places for newer Japanese immigrants to live.
When I was growing up, Hispanic and Japanese folks could be found working side-by-side in farming, bakeries, auto repair, landscaping and restaurants.
There is no Japanese American history in Los Angeles without other POC, especially other immigrants.
As a Japanese people living in the US, we need to show up for other immigrants, too, not just the Japanese ones.
