In the early days of tumblr, people posted anything and everything. Pornography, gruesome imagery, and even (it is rumored) some discourse on LGBTQ+ issues. But the most popular blog of all just posted photos of the corners of their house and the lint, dust bunnies and grime that collected there. This was called "soft grunge" and many emulators let it be known that if one followed their "tumblog" then the user could see more of this "soft grunge" on their "dash," short for "dashboard" as most cars at the time had a tumblr app in their console.

Among tumblr's early users in 1996 was a young Chad Kroeger, who would go on to invent one of the most revolutionary musical genres ever, and after his youthful internet obsessions, he named that genre "Grunge." Heir to the Kroeger Grocery fortune, he paid for a great deal of radio time and pushed the genre to take over the airwaves, as you can see if you look at this graph:

Sadly, this noisy depressing music couldn't last forever, and in 2006, Chad Kroeger disbanded Puddle of Mud and moved back to his modest home in Wrexham County Borough where he married his highschool sweetheart and gave birth to a son, and that son grew up to be none other than Daniel Carp, founder of tumblr itself, bringing us full circle.
