So I finished blasting through all three volumes of Clive Barker’s Next Testament this week and as a recovering ex-christian, it was freaking CATHARTIC to see the god of the old testament being as much of an asshole as I’d always suspected he was. I heartily enjoyed Wick’s otherwordly characterization and the way he used bible verses as snappy horror villain one-liners, revealing them for the abusive coercion that they are.
The moment when he says “Ask and you shall receive” before showering a roomful of panicking people in broken glass was...MMMM...so satisfying. Perfect. Wonderful. Glorious.
But for all its good points and pretty art, maaaaaaan...
*ending spoilers incoming*
...I wish the solution to a rampaging all-powerful god wasn’t praying to the other two members of the trinity. With a villain like that, you write yourself into a pretty tight corner, but I feel like there was a more creative solution out there. Humans create gods, after all. Could they not unmake them?
Though I did find it interesting that the other 2/3rds of the trinity were implied to have purposefully stepped away from humanity in order to let them grow on their own.
So, in conclusion, it’s a fun horror comic with a side of blasphemy, but not anything worth reading too deeply into.

Clive Barker's Next Testament
Plot: The old testament God comes out but is not the all loving entity we thought he was.
Review: I talked about the first few episodes last year but now that the series is finished I went back to review the whole thing and all in all I liked it. It kind of falls apart as the series gets bigger and bigger. It creates for some good visuals but kind of loses the ideals about religion and our role in the universe that the first few issues. All the dead bodies don't really have the same impact as the dinner party just discussing ideals.
It's still worth a read and works with some good ideals.
