Today, we tend to think of cartoons as funny entertainment for children. But it wasn't always that way. In the decades leading up to the First World War, every big city in the world had a satirical magazine full of caricatures skewering political figures and critiquing society. These magazines were highly influential, and they were at the forefront of political discourse at the time. Politicians' careers rose and fell based on cartoons, and the public formed its opinions on what it read in cartoon magazines. There is a famous quote that says, "Caricature is the face of a joke on the body of the truth." Words might eventually convince if you use enough of them, but an image is self evident. It communicated directly. Cartooning still has this power to persuade, but cartoonists need to take up the responsibility and make a stand. Perhaps someday cartooning will be more than talking dogs, princesses and funny ducks.
