The series follows men and women who will hopefully find love; however, throughout the process, they will never see their partners. For ten days in a speed dating format, the men and women dated each other in different “pods” where they could talk to each other, but never see each other. Whenever they decided, the men were able to propose to the woman they want to get married to. After the proposal, they revealed themselves to their partner, where they were able to see each other for the first time.

Following the ten days, all of the engaged couples headed to a couples retreat in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Unbeknownst to the couples, the entire group was headed to the same retreat. There, they were able to see all of the other potential partners they could have had.

Gakuen Kokoro, or more commonly known as Academy Hearts, was a lavish boarding school for the aristocratic back in the eighteenth century. Filled with the spawn of the elite and world-renowned personnel, it was the most privileged and prestigious school one could attend. 

Originally intended as a facility for those with, ahem, supernatural powers, the purpose of the school quickly disappeared, after the ill-fated death of the founder and headmistress, Lillette Crimson. There, picked up by a distant cousin, it became as what the history books stated; a place full of angst, bitter romances, and whirling affairs of the high and lavish. 

On the twenty-third anniversary of the academy’s existence, a great tragedy befell the staff and attendees of the school. A great fire totally decimated the academy grounds, leaving thirty-two dead, ninety-eight wounded, and thirty-three missing; only a mere twelve escaped unscathed. From that point forward, the academy was shunned and branded as a place of tragedy, resulting in its shutdown a year later.

It is now the year 2214, five-hundred years since the start of Academy Hearts. On a dreary January morning, ten disoriented humans of various ages and statuses find themselves inside a floating island, later to be known as the Gakuen Kokoro grounds, somehow recreated. Some find the transition between their normal lives to the mysterious school frightening, while some don’t remember their previous memories at all. No matter how they view this sudden change nonetheless, surviving is crucial in this perplexing new environment. Only then will they be able to unravel the puzzles of how and why they came to Gakuen Kokoro.
