Starting a new relationship after a breakup can be a challenge. How to know if you are ready? Will all relationships be always the same? Are you already over your ex and ready to love again?
I recently looked into a new term for me: NRE meaning New Relationship Energy. So yes, that’s the official term referring to the honeymoon phase of a newly found relationship – but what I want to talk about is that can NRE exist in friend relationships?
I think the answer is yes, there are a few resources about this over internet but they didn’t really do anything to define it for non-romantic relationships, so here is my attempt along with a word about my experience...
NRE perceptions
So, here is how NRE is defined in Wikipedia:
New relationship energy (or NRE) refers to a state of mind experienced at the beginning of sexual and romantic relationships, typically involving heightened emotional and sexual feelings and excitement.
However I think most people can relate to being excited when you feel like your interest click with someone. Here are some examples from a blog I found:
Have you ever met a new person and quickly realized that you wanted badly to be friends with them?
We can really see this a lot of platonic friendships where people will get really interested in their friends for bursts of time – they'll go everywhere together and hang out together. We see this a lot in high school relationships where two people will become close friends really quickly and just connect on every level and then two weeks later things have just kind of cooled off.

I think it’s worth reflecting on the NRE we can experience when connecting with all kinds of love (friendships and collaborations, and relationships with companion animals, great new authors, and new projects are some of the ones that jump out at me as having similar features).
Like all interests it’s important to note that NRE can go in waves, so the energy doesn’t always hit you right at the start of an acquaintance.
About me
As a highly sensitive person I feel like NRE definitely exists in friendships too, I really get attached to new friends but sadly a lot of them have dropped off. Of course this is related to other things for example situational relationship at school or work group, but I definitely feel like I can speak for some kind of a spark in friendships.
Conclusion
This was a very short check to the topic, but I feel like it’s good that the information is in the same place. Especially as I got frustrated trying to talk about this without proper material.
I'm unsure if NRE for friendships would need a different name, but I hope more research and articles from people specialized in the matter will pop up.
