Nails
Summary: Yn tells Max that Lewis paid for her new nails. Max is everything but happy about this.
The apartment was quiet in that soft, expensive way Max liked. Late afternoon light spilled through the tall windows, catching on glass and metal and the edges of trophies that had slowly accumulated on shelves without him ever really noticing when or how. He was sprawled on the couch in sweatpants and an old Red Bull hoodie, controller abandoned on the cushion beside him, eyes half on the muted TV and half on the door.
He always knew when Yn was close.
It wasnโt a sound exactlyโmore like a shift in the air, the feeling that the room was about to get warmer, brighter. When the lock clicked and the door opened, Maxโs mouth tilted into a smile before he even looked.
โHey,โ he called, lazy and familiar.
โHey,โ Yn answered back, voice light, pleased with herself.
She stepped inside, shrugging out of her jacket, her hair glossy and styled just enough to look effortless. She smelled like that salon she lovedโwarm oils, expensive creams, a hint of something floral that always clung to her for hours after. Max watched her cross the room, eyes drifting down automatically to her hands as she dropped her bag on the counter.
She didnโt say anything at first. Just held one hand up between them, palm facing him, fingers spread.
Max sat up straighter.
โOh,โ he said, interest sharpening immediately. โNew nails?โ
Yn beamed. โDo you like them?โ
He stood, crossing the space between them in three long strides. He took her hand carefully, like he always did when she had a fresh set, turning it under the light. The nails were perfectโelegant, glossy, a deep neutral shade that somehow still felt bold on her.
โTheyโre beautiful,โ he said honestly. โReally fucking nice.โ
He pressed a kiss to the back of her hand, slow and deliberate, lips lingering just a second longer than necessary. Ynโs smile softened, her shoulders relaxing the way they always did when he did that.
โI knew you would,โ she said.
Max grinned. โI always do.โ
She laughed quietly, leaning back against the counter. โYou shouldโve seen the place today. It was packed.โ
โMm?โ He let go of her hand reluctantly. โBusy day for being pretty?โ
โVery busy,โ she said, eyes bright. โMassage rooms were full, hair section was chaos. Even the nail techs were stressed.โ
Max snorted. โSounds like my nightmare.โ
โYou say that now, but you love that I go there.โ
He shrugged, unapologetic. โI love when you spend money on yourself.โ
She tilted her head, studying him. โYeah?โ
โYeah,โ he said simply. โYou work hard. You deserve it. Andโฆโ His mouth curved. โI like knowing I pay for it.โ
Yn laughed again, softer this time. โI know you do.โ
She pushed off the counter and wandered closer, kicking off her shoes. โAnyway,โ she continued casually, โyouโll never guess who I saw there today.โ
Max raised an eyebrow. โWho?โ
โLewis.โ
The name landed lightly, tossed into the air like it meant nothing at all.
Max blinked. โLewis?โ
โMhm,โ Yn said, nodding. โHe was in one of the chairs near the back.โ
Max frowned, processing. โAt the salon?โ
โYeah,โ she said, too casually. โHe was getting his braids done.โ
Max stared at her. โLewis?โ
She bit her lip, clearly enjoying this. โYes, Max. Lewis.โ
He shook his head. โI didnโt know he went to that place.โ
โWell,โ Yn shrugged, โapparently he does. Or at least today he did.โ
Max crossed his arms, eyes narrowing slightly, more confused than threatenedโat least at first. โDid you talk to him?โ
โA little,โ she said, reaching into her bag. โWe were sitting close. He was really nice.โ
Max hummed, noncommittal. โHe usually is.โ
Yn finally pulled something out of her bag and held it out toward him between two fingers.
His credit card.
She smiled sweetly. โHere. You can have this back.โ
Max looked from the card to her face. โWhy?โ
โWell,โ she said lightly, โthe nails were super expensive today.โ
He chuckled. โThatโs fine. You know I donโt care.โ
โI know,โ she said quickly. โBut you donโt have to worry.โ
Something in her tone made his stomach tighten.
โWhy not?โ he asked slowly.
Yn shrugged again, eyes sparkling. โLewis paid for them.โ
The room went very still.
Max stared at her like sheโd just switched languages mid-sentence. โWhat?โ
โHe insisted,โ she went on smoothly. โWe got along really well, and he said it wouldnโt hurt his bank account anyway. You know. Because he has so much money.โ
Maxโs jaw tightened.
โLewis paid for your nails,โ he repeated, voice flat.
โYeah,โ she said. โSweet, right?โ
He scoffed. โNo.โ
Yn blinked, feigning innocence. โNo?โ
โNo,โ Max said, taking a step closer. โWhy would he pay for your nails?โ
She smiled wider. โI donโt know. He offered.โ
โAnd you accepted?โ
โWell,โ she tilted her head, โit wouldโve been rude not to.โ
Max ran a hand through his hair, a sharp edge creeping into his expression. โThatโs weird.โ
โItโs just a nice gesture,โ she said. โYou always say money doesnโt matter.โ
โIt doesnโt,โ he shot back. โBut thatโs my girlfriend.โ
Ynโs eyes flicked up to his. โAnd?โ
โAnd I donโt like him paying for things for you,โ he said bluntly.
โOh,โ she said softly. โYouโre jealous.โ
He scoffed again. โIโm not jealous.โ
She laughed. โYou are.โ
โIโm not,โ he insisted, but his ears were already turning red. โI just donโt like it.โ
โWhy?โ
โBecause,โ he said, stepping even closer now, crowding her space, โIโm the one who takes care of you.โ
Yn looked up at him, amusement dancing in her eyes. โYou donโt own me, Max.โ
His gaze darkenedโnot angry, but intense. โI know.โ
She reached up, tapping his chest lightly with one finger. โThen why are you so bothered?โ
He grabbed her wrist gently, holding it there. โBecause I donโt want anyone else thinking they can buy you things.โ
Her smile softened, something warm and affectionate beneath the teasing. โHe doesnโt think that.โ
โHow do you know?โ
โBecause,โ she said, lowering her voice slightly, โI told him I have a boyfriend who spoils me rotten.โ
Max paused.
โYou did?โ
โOf course,โ she said. โAnd he laughed and said he could tell.โ
Maxโs grip loosened, but the possessive spark was still there, simmering. โStill.โ
She slipped her hand free and leaned in, lowering her voice conspiratorially. โHe said you must be very generous.โ
Max smirked despite himself. โI am.โ
She placed the credit card in his hand, curling his fingers around it. โAnd generous men donโt need to be jealous.โ
He looked down at the card, then back at her. โDid he actually pay?โ
She held his gaze for a beat.
Then she burst out laughing.
Max blinked. โWhat?โ
โIโm joking,โ she said between laughs. โI paid with your card.โ
He stared at her. โYouโโ
โI just wanted to see your face,โ she said, still laughing. โYou shouldโve seen yourself.โ
He exhaled sharply, half-relief, half-annoyance. โYouโre impossible.โ
โYou love it,โ she teased.
He shook his head, then suddenly straightened, decision snapping into place. โPut on your jacket.โ
Yn paused. โWhat?โ
โYour jacket,โ he repeated. โWeโre going out.โ
She raised an eyebrow. โWhere?โ
โTo buy you a Birkin.โ
Her mouth fell open. โMax.โ
โI also have a lot of money,โ he said firmly. โAnd it doesnโt hurt my bank account.โ
She laughed. โYouโre being ridiculous.โ
โI donโt care.โ
โMax, it was a joke.โ
He stepped closer again, voice dropping. โI donโt care.โ
She looked up at him, caught between laughter and something softer. โYou donโt need to prove anything.โ
โI want to,โ he said.
โWhy?โ
โBecause I like when you have nice things,โ he said honestly. โAnd I like when they come from me.โ
Her teasing faded, replaced by something warm and real. โYouโre insane.โ
He leaned down, kissing her hardโbrief but full of intent. When he pulled back, his forehead rested against hers.
โGo,โ he murmured. โJacket.โ
She sighed dramatically, but she was smiling as she reached for it. โYouโre never going to let this go, are you?โ
โNope.โ
As he guided her toward the door, hand warm and steady at her back, she laughed softly. โYou know I was going to pay you back anyway.โ
He opened the door, leaning down to murmur against her ear, โYou can pay me back later in the bedroom.โ
She shivered, heart light, already knowing she would.
