Dafuq is Networking? And How Do I Do It Remotely?

Last week I went to a charity fundraiser for a nonprofit. It was outside. Under an overpass. Because misinformation about vaccines and masking is rampant and it’s still not quite safe to gather in large groups indoors.

There I chatted with a young woman who was just like her country, young, scrappy, and hungry basically me roughly ten years ago: entrepreneurial, motivated, and trying to launch a career as a freelance editor. (She was also much taller and prettier than I was at 25, but I won’t hold that against her… the floozy.) Lily seemed cool and we had the same taste in charitable causes, so I gave her my card.

This week she sent me an email inviting me to lunch to talk about life and get some career advice. And to complete the time-honored ritual passed down by career strivers over generations… I accepted!

Last weekend, I took photos for a company that I had previously been affiliated with for their Halloween Party. It was mostly an outside event and was extremely low lighting throughout most of the area.

Even with a speed light, it was difficult to get photos that didn't need some form of editing.

Sometimes it was that the subject was too far away and I was trying my damnedest to not permanently blind them. (I had a soft box on my flash but even that only does so much)

Now, I don't have the "newest" camera model and I don't have a ton of money on hand for a lot of new equipment.

I actually just spent the last $60 to my name on the speed light and soft box solely for that event because I knew I would need them even though I'd only ever used the stock flash in previous low-light situations. The difference was that my previous low-light situations didn't have humans involved in them and this one did.

After a few drinks, those once steady poses became wobbly and blurry photos.

Constantly changing settings also impacted my workflow. I could no longer do a quick, basic edit with a copy and paste method in Lightroom as I had to fine-tune each photo individually.

Backlight, over/under exposed, movement and even depth of field were all issues with very few immediate, on-hand fixes.

Friday Night Social is a networking group that meets the first Friday of every month. It started as a way for TV and feature writers to meet one another and has evolved into so much more. This is a great way to “Network”. Plan on meeting people from different areas and levels in the entertainment industry.

This networking event is on a first name basis and everyone will receive a name tag with their first name only, this is best for the more established professional entertainers to maintain their anonymity which will allow them to network as well.

ADMISSION:

FREE to attend. Please pay for your own food, cocktails & parking. We ask everyone to purchase one drink, minimum, please.

Networking is one of those terms from the corporate lexicon that sounds slightly too intimate and distasteful to actually be acceptable in polite society. It sounds to me like there’s an orifice involved. Even if that orifice is, like, a USB jack and you need R2D2’s little pokey robot phallus to access it.

You’ve probably heard someone tell you, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know!” What they’re referring to there is the power of networking, in all its antidemocratic glory! It basically means that even when armed with talent, training, education, and qualifications, you should still try to make business connections with people who have the power to advance your career goals. Make those connections to get a leg up on all the chumps you’re competing with who don’t have those connections.
