jessica matten, cisgender woman. ––– athena, the dignitary for craft and wisdom in warfare in greek mythology. they appear to be thirty-six years old , but really they’re as long as time itself. she reminds me of spilled ink, the smell of old books, and candle wax.
→ details
athena can usually be found with her nose in a book. she’s often been described as bookish. as such, she sometimes appears to be aloof or eccentric.
athena is a strong believer in the phrase “history repeats itself.” she is a fierce proponent of women’s rights and believes that all women should learn self-defense.
when she’s not researching or writing, she can usually be found attending some kind of rally/protest. she considers herself to be an activist. she can be loud and in your face when it comes to social issues
enjoys: games of logic, chess, history. dislikes: losing. she’s got a competitive streak a mile long and her self-worth is tied up in her ability to outwit an opponent. so, loss is a major hit to her ego.
→ powers:
athena is ruled by logic. it is both her power and weakness as it allows her to step back from a situation and examine it from every angle. this provides her with the bird’s eye view needed to examine ever angle of a problem. she’s a planner, a plotter... wisdom in battle, whether that battle be a debate or a game of chess or something more physical.
as such, though, athena can sometimes be described as cold. empathy is often difficult for her.
athena’s mind is her greatest strength. in addition to wisdom and plotting, it’s allowed her to invent various different creations.
athena’s desire to win can sometimes push her to abandon her ethics. this is especially apparent in her fierce fight for justice, specifically in the strategies she uses when protesting/advocating on behalf of those she views as weaker.
→ weaknesses:
Athena’s desire to win can sometimes push her to abandon her ethics. this is especially apparent in her fierce fight for justice, specifically in the strategies she uses when protesting/advocating on behalf of those she views as weaker.
Athena’s power to create can only be used in dire circumstances and is limited to inanimate objects such as tools or weapons of the trade. After all, necessity is the mother of invention.
Athena’s ability to divine strategies and outcomes require a clear and unbothered mind. If she is torn or emotional, her power will cause more harm than good.

(li jun li cisfemale, she/her) the city of gods is proud to welcome echo. She appears to be thirty-eight years old and is a nymph from greek mythology. Echo can be found working as a private detective at new crete newspaper & detective agency and is saddened about the death of zeus. (written by jenni 30, she/her, mst.)
The beginning of Echo is tricky, because she had the ability to speak for herself. To paint the elegant lie of how her parents loved her, and how she had so many siblings she swore to protect. The truth is she didn’t really know her own beginning. Her mortal form adopted by a couple that hiked the woods, and heard the bellows of a child.
Everything was as normal as could be when she was younger, she’d say. Except for the euphoric sound of her singing able to entrance those around her. She was always keen about the details, and where she would be best suited for anyone else’s need but her own.
In her early twenties, she had started to sneak out back to her original home. Blanketed in nature, where she felt the most alive as a humanoid could feel. It was then she realized her siblings felt the pull to that same place. It was her own sister that brought Zeus to her safe haven. This created a problem for them all, especially if Zeus’s wandering libido was caught by his rumored wrathful wife.
It was inevitable that the time would come that she needed to protect her brethren from that fire of a scorned woman. The lies rolled off her tongue with ease. All her details built a well disguised story, but it wasn’t good enough. At the age of twenty-six, that’s the last time the mortal and nymph could speak freely. The casted screams from the mountain mirrored every word.
At first it was a bitch challenge, the woman silent except when she felt the compulsion rise in her throat to parrot the words of someone else. She never heard her singing voice again, and her home no longer made her feel safe. Zeus was confused at the situation, but deep down she hung onto the hope he had the power to revert the curse.
She learned to cope with it, and for society she took a vow of silence. This became easier to live with when her partner started to be as much as her voice they could be. The less she used her voice or fought to silence herself has taken a toll on her tone. Those that hear the hoarse whispers echo their verses back to them - almost think it’s their own voice reverberating off of the high rise buildings. It’s unrecognizable even to her.
The only work around she has found is communication via text or letters. The private detective route was perfect for her, with her partner by her side to get the verbal details. Her dark hues honed in like a hawk to try to decipher the underbelly clues of crime.
She frequently suffered from migraines and bouts of vertigo. But each year was the same, some day Zeus would help her, right? Then he ended up dead, and his case landed on her lap. Unable to even scream out in frustration, as her lips distorted in fury before they clasped shut forcefully. The tears peaked over the rim of her eyes, and cascaded down her cheeks. The future was bleak, and her only hope had been murdered. One of her tired hands moved to wipe away the droplets. A blank slate covered her face once more, as she grabbed the case file with her notebook to help start.
Each step that carried her after the initial news is accompanied by the quiet sob of her heart.
(tom ellis, cismale, he/him) the city of gods is proud to welcome thanatos. pronouns appears to be forty years old and is a god of death from greek mythology. thanatos can be found working as the owner at thebes coffee and bakery and is unsurprised about the death of zeus. @neongodsarchive
♣ when someone says the god of death, there are certain images that one thinks of. violence, bloodshed, people pleading for their life. none of those are thanatos, well at least he hopes not. there are god of violent death, illness and pain, and he is not that, he was a gentle guide to the afterlife. those who misconstrue his myth say that he causes death, but truthfully thanatos only takes lives that were at their natural end peacefully.
♣ thanatos grew up in the underworld with his brother, hypnos. it was always the two of them, guiding the souls of the dead to the underworld. thanatos wasn’t sure when people started to see him as the intimidating one. he didn’t want to be intimidating but apparently being associated with death would do that to a person. realistically he wishes he could be more like hypnos, with less expectation and less pressure. he puts on a steely front, but the tension between himself and hypnos hurts him more than he will ever say.
♣ being associated with death means that thanatos knows more than anyone that everything is fleeting. at first he didn’t let him stop that from having his little flings and friendships, but it felt like he was caught in a loop of opening up to someone and then having to lead them into death, or worse befriending someone only for them to try and use him or trick him into escaping death. To other gods he was a stoic and intimidating presence but realistically he was just lonely and hiding it from others.
♣ despite everything, thanatos took his job as a good seriously for a long time, refusing to participate in the frivolity of new crete, until he finally just broke. he needed a change. he needed to be away from death. so he opened a coffee shop.
♣ in terms of zeus’ passing. he isn’t shocked, although usually he can feel when death is near and zeus didn’t give off that stench of a soon to be dead person. but the man was widely disliked, so of course someone would come up with a way to kill a god just to be rid of him.
♣ p o w e r s ♣
♣ of course, thanatos doesn’t just up and kill people. that would be immoral. however being associated with a peaceful death does mean that he can help ease pain with a touch (not heal it, just take some of the pain). in human form it’s not as strong as it could be, so i would say he has more of an aspirin touch.
♣ thanatos can get a sense for death, he’s been around it so much that it’s easy to recognise. he can generally ignore it, but if someone is close to death or has recently been close to someone who has passed it is like a smell that he just can’t get away from. he can’t stop someone from dying, again immoral, but he just knows when it is near. if he concentrated real hard he could probably tell you when you’ll die, but please don’t do that. it’s painful and sad.
♣ is making a GREAT cappuccino a power?
♣ the majority of his cool power shit is related to his true form, y’know, a gentle touch that can remove pain, the peaceful removal of a soul from a body, wings to transport souls to the underworld. probably can tell someone exactly how they will die. none of that will make an appearance.
( golshifteh farahani, cisgender female, she / her ) the city of gods is proud to welcome hel. she appears to be thirty eight years old and is the goddess of death from norse mythology. hel can be found working as the proprietor at a hole in the wall vintage shop and is amused by the death of zeus. (written by saint, twenty, they / them, cst.)
GENERAL INFORMATION . . .
name : hel
alias(es) : helena
title : norse goddess of death
apparent age : thirty-eight
pronouns : she/her
sexuality : bisexual
relationship status : single
occupation : owner of lost & found, a hole in the wall vintage store
downward and northward. hel, for all her stubborn determination, cannot recall exactly what came before niflheim. logically — that is, in her logic —there must have been something! some sort of before bit prior to her responsibility over the dead of the nine worlds. she simply couldn’t fathom a reality in which there was nothing and then there was niflheim.
and yet . . . niflheim is all she can remember. she can remember — if she focuses ever so carefully — the orders given to her. board and lodging. board and lodging to the old and the sick and the unremarkable sent to her dominion. the orders were the first of her many, many memories, and so she took them to heart.
hel tried to taking special care of those sent to her; offered them board and lodging and, at first, care and compassion. however, the souls sent to her did not take so kindly to the death which she embodied, mournful and eternally regretting valhalla, which they had not earned.
hel one day found herself grown cold and detached from the souls which she ruled over — for loving those who could scarcely spare her a passing thought wore down on her spirits. there was one, however, amidst the many, who offered her a bit of solace. baldr — beauty incarnate in the weary eyes of hel. he offered her kindness, a treatment the other souls of niflheim had refused her. she could understand why the living loved him so, and almost — just almost — considered releasing him from the underworld at frigg’s pleas. it was not right to keep someone so beloved from those who loved him! . . . but hel had grown selfish and fond of the man, and would only release him if every single being — alive and dead — wept for the man’s death. when they did not, and baldr was to remain at her side for eternity, she did not feel her deserved happiness . . . she only felt . . . guilt: gnawing and numbing and all encompassing.
AFTER . . .
hel was less than impressed when knowledge of the city of gods reached her. what was a city compared to nine worlds? she had grown proud in her cynicism, and yet, with each passing day, she found that city — new crete, was it? — making it’s way into her thoughts more and more often.
she cannot remember what spurred the move, only that: one day there was niflheim, and the next there was new crete. in new crete she could start anew.
lost & found began as merely a way to pass time, a side gig while she discovered what wonders new crete could offer. but her side gig became her main gig, and lost & found has stood proud as a local favorite “hole in the wall” vintage shop.
still, hel kept to herself as she navigated the ever-growing city. when news of zeus’s death reached her doorstep, the goddess had a hard time hiding her amusement. the pompous bastard deserved it. perhaps, one day, the implications of the god’s death would dawn on the goddess, but for now . . .
POWERS . . .
hel, despite the rather large domain under her command, is not as powerful as many of the other god’s inhabiting new crete.
I . her most notable power is that of necromancy. as goddess of the underworld, she has complete control of the souls within her domain. should she will it, she can release a soul from niflheim to return and walk amongst the living once more. this process does, however, take a great toll on hel’s human form — both mentally, and physically. it is not something done often — or for free.
II . it is a grim gift — if one could even call it that — but hel can sense when death is near. she cannot determine the cause or exact time, but she can feel it’s proximity in her bones and who it comes for. furthermore, her touch can ease the pain of passing. since coming to crete, she has made it a point to assist any passing she may come across.
III . hel can also, as her domain resides over the nine worlds, understand and speak any spoken, written, or otherwise communicated language. if utilized for prolonged periods of time, it can leave hel with a nasty, thrumming migraine that only rest ( and laying off the powers ) can solve.
IV . in a more general sense, hel is not as powerful in new crete as she is in niflheim. many of her powers do not extend to this realm, left behind in the halls of her many mansions. the price of her staying in new crete is that, more often than deemed “normal”, she finds her human form falling victim to illness or fatigue. any extraneous use of her powers only aggravates this.
MISCELLANEOUS FACTS & TID - BITS . . .
I . my portrayal of hel is not an evil one ! instead of playing into any true evil archetypes, i’d say she’s more of a morally grey character — withdrawn, cold, and sometimes’s self serving, but fiercely loyal to those who have proven themself a friend. once you break through her icy exterior, she’s good company to have around — honest.
II . hel does not remember her family, nor does she remember the brief part of her childhood spent in jötunheimer. she does, however, remember what brief glimpse of odin she got before being exiled beneath the roots of yggdrasil to niflheim. she does not assume him family, but does feel a strange kinship for him. this fact shames her, considering it was his command that banished her to niflheim.
III . hel has an alias — a secret identity, if you will — for when she she interacts with mortals, or simply doesn’t want to be perceived as hel. the name helena struck her fancy — similar enough that it was still her, yet different enough that, when she so desired a break from hel, she could take one. she mainly uses it when interacting with mortals ignorant of the goings-on of new crete, or those outside new crete entirely.
ADMIN NOTE . . .
as of now, i don’t have anything else to say beyond the contents of this post are subject to change as i portray and get to know hel through interactions! . . . that being said, feel free to hit me up if you want to plot or develop connections! i’m so excited to start getting to know her, and getting to know y’all and you’re lovely muses!
alperen duymaz, cis man. ––– hades, the dignitary for the dead in greek mythology. they appear to be thirty years old , but really they’re as long as time itself. he reminds me of the feeling of burning, knowing there is a breeze but not feeling it on your cheek, and sleepless days and nights. penned by florence, 25+, est, she+her
PART TWO - SHOW YOUR WEAKNESS
outside of the underworld they can scarcely use his powers
he cannot manipulate in the upperworld
he cannot tell a soul whether in the upper or underworld where their loved ones are in the underworld
everyone has a beginning , but when you’re as old as time you kinda just forget and hades has 100% forgotten a lot of his childhood. so like to him he just kinda spawned you know ?
imagine hades just walking out of some shadows like here i am bitch
a very thoughtful and man of few words
always within the shadows, listening and watching
the crow’s nest is very dear and near to hades’ heart. a place where one can dance, drink and forget. but hades has a private room overlooking the floor where one can play cards, still drink and socialize with the elite but what’s more is that this is where hades sees mortals and the divine alike to see and hear from those in need. but in return they must do something for hades. its a bargain, and if they lose well, they get nothing.
hades has always been the suffering in silence type. he looks back on the younger years, wondering why the fuck he was such an idiot and full of such rage. picking fights, too many vices.
now he lives a simpler life, days in the upperworld and nights in the underworld, taking care of the souls within his realm

(joel kinnaman, cis male, he/him) the city of gods is proud to welcome thor. he appears to be forty years old and is the god of thunder from norse mythology. thor can be found working as a blacksmith and is quiet about the death of zeus. (written by rose, 25, she/her, est.)
who needs daddy zeus when daddy thor is in town?? jk jk rip daddy zeus ;)
so i’m saying this for myself mostly, but this thor is v different from marvel’s thor!! saying that right off the bat or else he’ll turn into marvel thor i can feel it in my bones i know myself
he’s a man of the people which is part of why he chose to be a blacksmith in the human realm. he wasn’t down with trying to be a big hot-shot ceo like his mythos counterparts. too much paperwork.
he’ll sometimes guest bartend at valhalla bar & grill
still in possession of mjölnir - he uses it for work mostly now but always keeps it close
did do drag once to help freya out
wants to do what’s right, although his methods aren’t always the most by-the-book
loves his wife sif, they have an open marriage, but they both know that at the end of the day, they’re each other’s ride or die
he knows he’s a suspect in zeus’s murder (because of the big ass “T” carved into daddy boy’s chest), so he’s trying to keep a low profile at the moment, hoping the suspicions around hera overwhelm any kind of noise about him. besides, why would he wanna kill zeus? it’s not like he had any strong motive...that anyone knows of...
overall, he’s the kinda guy who’ll help you out when you have nowhere else to go. however, don’t cross him or his people. the aftermath of that, well...
❛ see, your threats are still age twelve... i’ll help you work on that. ❜ introducing hermes.
hello, i’m danvers ( she/her ) and i hail in the pacific time zone. it’s been a longtime since i’ve been in a mythology group but i’m stoked to be here! pls bare with me while i find hermes voice!
character.
name: hermes. god of speed, trade, and travel. pronouns: he/him. appears twenty-six. occupation: track coach at new crete uni. traits: clever, empathetic. though dishonest, and cunning. height: 5′10″. hair / eye color: brunette, styled / hazel. facial features: thick beard. orientation: heteromantic.
mythology.
as it goes; hermes was the messenger of gods and the god of trade and eloquence. more so, he had the ability to travel between worlds ( from heaven to earth and most notoriously the land of hades, which was difficult for other gods ). as such, part of his duties were to guide souls or astral forms down to the underworld after death, a role he shared with the god of death, thanatos. he no longer does this now of course.
his powers include super speed and flight. he doesn’t use these abilities normally, though. he mainly relies on his cunning and slick tongue and talents to weasel his way out of situations.
hermes was a known trickster and for a time even pranked the other gods for his own amusement apollo being one of them. he’s since matured and lessoned the tricks.
new crete.
i assume hermes followed the other olympians to new crete? his interest and infatuations with earth had always been known, so it took little push for him to settle.
his love for running went hand in hand with the mundane sport, track & field. hermes found himself quite bored in new crete, and as the saying goes: idle hands are the devil’s workshop, so he weaseled his way into being a coach. he got into trouble, though, when he attempted to give magic running socks to a human. zeus did not like this, so hermes knew never to use olympian gifts for self gain.
he tends to surround himself with humans who like his interests in some form or another. this usually imbodies his love for sports and music.
hermes is by reputation a trickster but this is not to get confused with malevolence. he’s a great liar yes, but doesn’t do things with ill intentions. he’s generally reasonable and helpful by nature and has a comical side to himself. if things get too serious, he knows just how to finesse a conversation and then bolt.
now, the news of zeus caused him a great deal of shock. how the great god of the sky could be slayed reminded hermes that his life was in danger now more than ever. his first thought was to run, save his own divinity and hope others followed but he couldn’t. at least not yet.
wanted connections.
give me those he once pranked and who still hold grudges for his trickster days; maybe someone hermes doesn’t trust and for good reason; a past fling; someone who shares his love for sports -particularly track & field; someone he used to aid when he was a messenger? honestly, i’m up for anything! these are just basic bc i’m basic ™
(cody fern, cis-male, he.him) the city of gods is proud to welcome eros. he appears to thirty two years old and is the god of love, lust and sex. eros can be found working as a baker at the thebes coffee and bakery and is one-dimensional about the death of zeus. (written by maxine, 24, she.her, cst.)
helloooo hi my name is maxine and im awkward at intros, but i’m 24 yrs young and i’m always around on mobile if you would like to plot or give this a like and i can slide into your dms !!!
basic stats:
name: eros
age: 32
occupation: baker at thebes coffee and bakery.
for plotting purposes because eros’ parents were often rumored as aphrodite or ares, or oftentimes just aphrodite i’m just going to say that most people don’t know what his parentage is not even eros. the case with the bows and arrows however, remains the same. eros had two different sorts of arrows, golden ones which caused individuals to fall in love, and ones made of lead that caused others to love or hate each other depending on who they are.
eros’ relationship with lust, love and sex is however complicated for the young god. he is all in for helping other people fall in love, however for himself? he would never imagine it. people have considered eros to be childish in a sense to believe in love at first sight for other people other than himself. for most of the part if it was regarding to himself, eros had assumed that he would be doomed to never finding anything. although he’s not always a matchmaker relationship wise, he doesn’t mind setting people up even if he thinks that they’ll just be good for each other with actual love or not....
eros has fallen in love once with the young princess psyche. but most people know not to even murmur her name around him. eros since, has been unhinged, unraveling into other gods lives making it messier more for them than himself because he can be told that he’s quite monotone with relationships that aren’t pertaining to his own. in fact, it’s quite hard for most people to even understand who eros has relationships with because in a sense he is closed off. eros most of the time doesn’t believe in relationships for himself, they were dead to him. however whenever people thought of eros they thought of relationships for him despite the fact of him never actually being in one himself.
eros and the baker is also a new concept. in another life perhaps he could have done something more with his life. or perhaps someone could make a sexual innuendo about his job and how he likes to use his hands a lot. but really the truth is that eros is a pretty good baker. there’s no rhyme or reason to it really, he’s just good at his job and he’s good at getting to know people. although he doesn’t own the coffee shop, someone might start to think that he does.
