TRANSLATION Listening to a podcast about the lives of gorillas, I remembered an incident from when my son was very young. The thing about the gorillas is this: gorillas have a gestation of eight and a half months, so very, very close to the gestation of women and humans and they stay, they sleep together with the baby, the baby gorilla, they keep it attached, now I don't know if they breastfeed it, however until they are three years old they always keep it attached on them. This reminded me of an episode that happened when my son was very young, when I... my son was born in Australia, I was alone with my husband, there was no mother, grandmother, aunt, not even friends who had young children, so I was kind of left to myself as far as reassurances and different theories about how, what to do when there is a newborn at home, and my son did cry, so the night I did, I was picking him up. Now, in Australia there is this school of thought, which is an American school of thought, that of controlled crying, that is the controlled crying which says: when the baby cries and you go and pick them up, you are getting them used to the fact that crying is a way of calling you and getting you there, so if you want them to stop crying, especially at night when they wakes up, you don't go and the baby will learn to go back to sleep on their own and solve all your problems. The thing hadn't convinced me much, in fact I had not even tried to do it because it did not feel natural, also because, you try to fall asleep when there is the baby crying. And so, because I'm a bit of a precise person, I set out to do my research and, as the case may be, right in those days in Melbourne there was a conference, I can't remember what it was about, on childhood, on psych, maybe it was on psychology, anyway there was a talk by a luminary who was also going to talk about controlled crying, so I rushed to this conference and basically this gentleman said, but are you guys bananas? Do you know that gorillas, apes hold babies and go and calm them down when they cry? Are you bananas? Forget these American extravagance! I liked it so much that at the end of the lecture I went to talk to the luminary, told him that I was a new mother, I was in doubt whether to take this approach or not, and he said, an Italian mom? Are you for real? Oh please, go and take your son and you hug and console him, that the only thing you are teaching the child, when you don't go when he cries, is that you can cry all you want there is no one coming to save you, there is no one who is here with you, you are alone in the world. Do what your mother's heart tells you, that's the right thing. And it did work out ok.

#mammalettrice #ciuccio #libro #neomamma https://www.instagram.com/p/B1gog06oOqq/?igshid=333j5f13exyg
