So, if any of you actually wanted to (like me) know more about what Darius was going to say:
Neochrome is a very special photoreceptor that’s found only in a certain species of algae and a number of ferns (the ferns being what Darius was talking about). Despite the fact that ferns are one of the oldest plants on the planet and were a primary source of dinosaur food, neochrome actually wasn’t that big in the fern family--if it existed at all--during the time of the dinosaurs.
Why?
Because neochrome is specially designed to absorb a lot of energy from dimly-lit places. Obviously this comes in handy when you’re in a dense forest, but really, it’s easier to just move around and thrive in open areas, or to grow bigger than everything around you...
...unless a giant meteor hits the earth and blocks out the sun for years. Then you, Mr. Neochrome Fern, are suddenly feasting on the dim rays of sunlight because you’re absorbing more wavelengths of light than everyone else who specifically adapted to the fact that the sun has a consistent pattern since forever and ever. As a result, during these years of darkness, you absolutely go crazy, and all of a sudden, you’re the New Big Thing...and even when trees decide to get their act together and take the planet back, you’re cool with it, because you lived in the darkness of an apocalyptic ash cloud, a little tree shade isn’t going to hurt you! You absorb red and blue wavelengths.
As for Darius’s excitement, I would assume that the ferns are thriving in the dense jungles of Nublar and regrowing at a proper rate to sustain the giant herbivores. It’s also possible that the Triceratops from the original park helped to spread the fern all across the island when they favored it, meaning that it’s everywhere and probably adapted really well.
