We had a guest this morning. We're all ill, so I began my day by loudly whispering from my bed at my partner who was in the kitchen: 'Who's quacking like crazy all the time?' He hadn't even heard any quacking.
My youngest began his day by yelling: 'Mom, there's a duckling in my room!' First, I thought a cat brought him in, but no, he WALKED in on his own. Of course, we caught him and put into a cat carrier until we know what to do. And right then we saw his mom sitting on the neighbor's house roof and quacking like crazy. It was her I'd heard before. But well, none of us speaks duck, so we didn't know how to let her know he is here, and she flew away.
After that he managed to escape the carrier, luckily, I saw it, and put him back. Then my partner and I had to roam the adjacent streets up to the river in hope of finding the duck-mom, but she was nowhere to be seen. Then I spent a couple of hours in my bedroom with the duckling reading the internet about the situation. Well, what I found out was best to do, is to take him to a duck family with the young of the same age.
There were, like, three adult ducks at the riverbank, and it was pretty clear, if there are families with the young, they're hiding somewhere where we can't see them. You can't give a duckling to an adult duck either, they won't accept him. Well, I've come up with an idea of trying to give some food to the ducks we saw at the riverbank in hope that some duckling would come out as well.
You know what? We began feeding them, and there was the only one duck-mom with two little ones! While I distracted the adults with the food, my partner let out our little guest, and he instantly ran into the reed along with his two peers.
Just a moment later, mom joined them as well. I think there's a huge chance it was his actual mom. And that this little family was walking from our neighborhood up to the river, like some weird ducks who nest in someone's backyard, do. And one of the three ducklings got separated on their way, and accidentally walked into our house at that rare moment when our dog or cats didn't see him, but our son did (the chance of catching such a moment is actually very slight!). And we all three were home to help. And that his mom with his siblings were at the riverbank when we came looking for them. It's amazing how many tiny chances one small duckling needs to make this big day!
I wish I had taken a photo.
