I had seen it.
A sestina written by me for my A.P. English class in May. You pick 6 random words and write a poem using them in different orders.
I had seen it.
…And so there was nothing left for it to eat,
Nothing possible to withdraw from its bank,
A size reduced, like a god to a button,
All things of atomic origin, with physical form, the enemy,
It all went quiet; the enduring night,
I had seen it from within the wall.
At once it had started, I was far apart from the wall,
I had never felt starved, possessed no need to eat,
Living in permanent light; only my blinks gave night,
No needs felt familiar or human, carried no bank,
My transitory, ephemeral, articulation had no enemy,
Now everything changed, as though initiated by the press of a button.
It was only after that catastrophic commencement by button,
That my formation inched toward that wall,
I felt separate; moving forward without control, I became my enemy,
The apparition to which I was tied enjoyed gluttonous velocity, choosing my mind to eat,
I saw what was at hand; I beseeched light to stay in my mental bank,
For I was gliding through the last bit of light toward a deafening crack of the approaching night.
The rush was coming my way; the great black expedition of night,
No gaze could have seen superior to the Abyss that was in button,
Iotas of celestial pieces devoured, distantly abducted to its bank,
My mode moved synchronically with the depredation; maintained shift obliging the wall,
Gorging itself, leaving no specimen left to eat,
This non-corporeal element was unstoppable, it truly had no enemy.
Now I stared into its eyes, the boundless abyss, it saw form and I as enemy,
In an instant the celestial world near me expunged into blankness; pure night,
All masses neighboring became void, just more morsels to eat,
Falling to its knees, like a blow to the button,
The cosmic collective crumbled, yet now my constitution was nigh the wall,
Otherworldly extinction – completely bereft from bank to bank.
I beheld the emptiness from bank to bank,
A place of enduring silence, I now conceived nihility to be the enemy,
At last, my configuration reached that wall,
My formation, my framework, my mind, were all that remained in that night,
So sudden, so unexpected. Actualized, seemingly, by the apathetic press of a button,
Surviving in oblivion, nothing existed in actuality. Now it was the Abyss’s turn to eat.
I awoke, a disheveled husk of a man in the night,
Now no protection remained from the wall, it gives as much protection as a button,
The enemy, my mind, gives me my bank of nightmares. Now they come out to eat.
