Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia

Elizabeth Stuart (19 August 1596 – 13 February 1662) was Electress of the Palatinate and briefly Queen of Bohemia as the wife of Frederick V of the Palatinate. The couple's selection for the crown by the nobles of Bohemia was part of the political and religious turmoil that set off the Thirty Years' War. Since her husband's reign in Bohemia lasted over only one winter, she is called "The Winter Queen".

Description

In the legends of King Arthur Vivien was an evil enchantress. She entrapped the magician Merlin by misusing the spells he entrusted to her. We know reviewers admired this painting for the haughty beauty of the woman alone. But the symbols warn the viewer of her evil nature: the rose of passion, the apple of the Fall, the poisonous daphne, the opium poppy of obliteration. Here, Sandys has been influenced by Rossetti's half-length portrayals of beautiful women which place full focus on the sensuality of female face, shoulder and breast.

Catherine Elizabeth Cooke

(May 5, 1924 – August 13, 2024)

Miss Cooke was an American designer principally known for her jewelry. She has been called "an icon within the tradition of modernist jewelry" and "a seminal figure in American Modernist studio jewelry".

Her pieces have been shown nationally and internationally and are included in a number of museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York.

She is regarded as an important role model for other artists and craftspeople.
