Nécessaire with watch German probably ca. 1745–50 On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 540 Fitted with sewing and writing implements as well as a watch, this unmarked nécessaire shows delightful chinoiserie decoration in the Rococo style, echoing the work of the influential Munich designer François Cuvilliés (1695–1768).
Nécessaire with watch, metalwork (ca. 1745–50) This German portable box features a bombé commode shape crafted from lustrous mother-of-pearl and gold. It features a blend of Chinoiserie and indigenous Brazilian iconography popular in German princely courts. Its interior contains various grooming and sewing implements, and an embedded watch signed by an anonymous Parisian maker. Loc. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
