This Van Dyke's Salamander is only found in (or, endemic to) western Washington! We were fortunate to be able to examine this gorgeous creature up close while scoping the Arctic Loon we had just located out in Neah Bay. While holding salamanders is not optimal because the oils and salts on our hands can injure the creatures due to their incredibly absorbent skin, I feel more comfortable about it in that all of our hands were thoroughly rinsed and moistened by the torrential downpour of a winter coastal Pacific Northwest storm! #vandykessalamander #neahbay (at Neah Bay, Washington)
