Nature stewardship is intrinsic to my model of queerness. Being a good steward is caring for my surroundings and for the environment through direct action; it upends the “man conquers nature” narrative. My desire to raise a rainbow flag at the top of a mountain is not to show I “own” a mountain but to show that queer folks and other marginalized people who get left out of “outdoor rec” can summit a mountain, too. The mountain is queer, the forest is queer, and everything the light touches is queer, too, because nature is queer. I don’t post photos of myself here, but I wanted to share that we just found out through a fan that our zine The Queer Language is Flowers made it all the way to @othernatureshop in Berlin! 😍🌈 Here’s the German and English images from their bilingual newsletter, where our zine was reviewed. “Something that particularly impressed me is that although the use of flowers for sending messages is often limited to romantic love (red roses and all that), the authors made much wider connections. Lavender is used for solidarity and healing, for example, and Dandelion as a symbol for finding our queer home.
