Let's talk about Kuper Island from @cbcpodcasts .
This week, Pope Francis went to Canada to beg forgiveness for the abuse and molestation perpetuated against indigenous children in Canada's state sponsored, Catholic run, residential schools, that native kids were forced to attend from 1894, with the last one closing in *1997*.
In Kuper Island, host Duncan McCue speaks with people from the Penelakut nation who were subjected to horrific abuse and brutality during their time at the residential school on Kuper Island, now named Penelakut Island to honor the people instead of a colonizer and a school staffed by hard hearted sociopaths and child rapists.
McCue does a beautiful job of listening and honoring the memories of those that died and those that live by giving voice, research, and time to uncovering the horrors of residential schools. And he brings an important perspective to the work as a member of the Anishinaabe (Ojibway) people, from Ontario, which is member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nations.
An 8 part series with 30-60 minute episodes, it's well worth a listen if you are able. Please note, this podcast contains descriptions of the psychological, physical, sexual abuse, and murder of children. If you are unable to listen due to the nature of these crimes, please take care of yourselves.
Personally, I'm pretty sure the Pope and the Catholic church have literally more money than Musk, so they could do more than apologize, and could bring these abusers to justice. It's the very least they could do. But I digress...
So, if you find it important to bare witness to the wrongs of the past, want to know/understand more of the dark history of "Indian" schools, or listening to true crime, then Kuper Island is for you!
