Song Review: Los Lobos - “Flat Top Joint” (Live)
Even without an audience to feed off, Los Lobos are hungry on stage.
Performing their version of the Blasters’ “Flat Top Joint” before their Cinco de Mayo livestream, the Wolves demonstrate, again, why they were chosen to record the “La Bamba” soundtrack all those years ago.
And the reason is this: early American rock ‘n’ roll courses through their veins just as strongly as the traditional Mexican music with which they did their early woodshedding.
The Blasters and Los Lobos were pals when they were coming up and Steve Berlin - who wails some mean sax on this just-released video - eventually made the jump from the former to the latter.
Their studio version was released on Native Sons, which Sound Bites will review in this space shortly.

"Redneck commentary on reincarnation"
The Napa Valley is one of my favorite spots to visit in California, partly due to how gorgeous it is, and partly due to my fondness for fine wine and delicious food. I now have Napa to thank for this duo, Native Sons, too. The synthwave and electro-rock which they present us with on their second single, Say Nothing, is dreamy nostalgic and slick propulsive, like a fusion of M83 and Future Islands. I can’t wait to hear what else the pair, both veterans of the music scene prior to pairing up as Native Sons, have cooking up for us next. Word is, they already have a debut EP readied for later this summer.
