Warcraft I am Mal'Ganis, I am a turtle!
Happy Valentine's Day
On today's episode of "KatieSkarlette expends way too much brain energy trying to figure out the trainwreck of Shadowlands lore years after the fact," I'm confused about the loyalty of the nathrezim.
Events unfold like this:
Denathrius is defeated and imprisoned in Remornia.
Zovaal gives exactly zero fucks about that and does nothing to help him.
Mal'Ganis, Kin'tessa and the other nathrezim recover Remornia with the Sire's soul inside.
Mal'Ganis and Kin'tessa go with Zovaal to the Sepulcher of the First Ones. The adventure journal for their raid encounter says: "Using subterfuge and guile, the nathrezim have worked for eons to bring the Jailer's plan to fruition. Now, on the brink of their master's victory, they only need to complete one final task to ensure none are left to resist the new order of the cosmos."
That calls the Jailer the nathrezim's master. The nathrezim call Denathrius their master. For eons they were supposedly serving both, but in the post-Castle Nathria raid, pre-Dragonflight expansion era, who did they really answer to?
Explanation #1: The nathrezim go along with the Jailer's scheme because they don't know he screwed over Denathrius and assume they're all still on the same side.
Explanation #2: The nathrezim go along with the Jailer's scheme even though they know he screwed over Denathrius, because they and the Sire can still benefit from it.
The second theory makes more sense, as Sylvanas and that random Mawsworn blacksmith were the only people who heard the Jailer say "Every soul has its purpose. Denathrius has served his." Even without that damning dialogue, however, Denathrius might find it suspicious that Zovaal didn't send help in his hour of need. (Honestly, he gave the guy a small ocean's worth of anima, and this is the thanks he gets? Ungrateful bastard.)
Did the brothers get a chance to talk to each other after the nathrezim rescued Denathrius? I'm sure Zovaal would be like "Um, yeah, I was totally going to help you but I've been so busy lately I hadn't gotten around to it yet. Sure, Mal'Ganis and Kin'tessa are welcome to tag along to the Sepulcher." (Only, y'know, with less personality. Because Zovaal.)
However, it's entirely possible Denathrius still doesn't know that his brother couldn't be bothered to rescue him from imprisonment.
More speculation about the Eternal Ones (with possible spoilers for future chapters of my fic "Gone to a Better Place") below...
