I can’t believe Hannah Gadsby single-handedly ended anti-vaxxers and made autism more tangible for people who aren’t on the spectrum in a single comedy special. Everyone go watch “Douglas.”

Me during the Quarantine
"My brain takes me to places where no one else lives." -- Hannah Gadsby
I get the Hannah Gadsby pufferfish whenever someone uses the 🥺 emoji
Poor me thought (insert misogynist/homophobic/racist male comedian name here) was funny until Hannah Gadsby showed up 🤦🏻♀️

How many women you think gunna put their finger up they bootyhole cause Hannah Gadsby
“By the time I identified as being gay, it was too late. I was already homophobic, and you do not get to just flick a switch on that. No, what you do is you internalize that homophobia and you learn to hate yourself. Hate yourself to the core. I sat soaking in shame… in the closet, for ten years. Because the closet can only stop you from being seen. It is not shame-proof. When you soak a child in shame, they cannot develop the neurological pathways that carry thought… you know, carry thoughts of self-worth. They can’t do that. Self-hatred is only ever a seed planted from outside in. But when you do that to a child, it becomes a weed so thick, and it grows so fast, the child doesn’t know any different. It becomes… as natural as gravity.”
“I need to tell my story properly because you learn from the part of the story… you focus on.”
from Nannette by Hannah Gadsby
Wishing a very Happy Birthday to Hannah Gadsby! Her comedy special Nanette holds a special place in my heart. I know it sounds like an understatement to call that show a game changer but that's exactly what it is. Some comedians care too much about trying to sell you on the idea of their stage persona while others may be solely concerned with having you laugh AT them; however, in Nanette, Gadsby feels genuine in her connection with the audience, laughing WITH us as she shares the humors and hardships of life. It's therapeutic in every sense of the word. I think its a quintessential example of how comedy can be both witty and moving. There are many things in the special that have stuck with me but this quote is something I think of often. I drew this picture of her for my Wise Words series that showcases quotes that inspire me.
