With too much extra space, any sudden stops or shifting while driving can cause them to slide around which, at best, stresses them out and, at worst, can cause injury from hitting the sides of a bigger enclosure in the case of an accident.
Being in a travel container that allows them to touch all sides keeps them nice and snug during the ride. Snakes are flexible, I promise they can handle being in a tight space for a few hours.
