Mystogan joined Fairy Tail because at the time it was small and didn’t attract a lot of attention. This made him very comfortable in his search for Zeref. In his search for Zeref he takes a lot of missions that mention a demon of any kind, this makes others mistake him for a very dedicated magic hunter. 

Mystogan is a demon of Zeref revived by the R-System to test to make sure it works. Jellal was in the room when it happened and Mystogan stole his face. It was seeing Mystogan’s power that made Jellal become obsessed with the idea of bringing Zeref back. 

Mystogan doesn’t see his body as his own, having an alien syndrome with it. He does get a body of his own later on. 

Though Mystogan took Jellal’s face it was an accident and he is deeply uncomfortable with it. He is uncomfortable with his body in general because being in a human form is horrible and uncomfortable to him as his dark magic slowly rots the human body away. It’s like that one scene from the Last Unicorn when Amalthea is given a human form. He is away all the time because he is hunting down Zeref to kill him so that maybe he will be given a proper body that can actually contain him. 

Mystogan was the first demon Zeref ever created and Zeref realized that Mystogan’s body wasn’t a proper shell for him and as a mercy Zeref sealed him away. Sure Mystogan is comatose and can’t do anything, but he isn’t dying or suffering. 

Mystogan uses magic objects to deplete his magic levels to slow his body’s decay. People mistake these as holder magic but holder magic types can actually recognize it for what it is. It is a VERY old form of holder magic that took magic from the user over time and held onto it for later. This also means they realize he is siphoning a LOT of magic off regularly because of how many of them he carries. He also carries around a LOT of magic healing tools, more than any normal wizard and definitely more than any S-Class wizard carries. Usually it would be embarrassing for an S-class wizard to carry that many healing tools but for Mystogan he isn’t sure when his body will finally give out so a medical emergency could happen at any moment. 

He is constantly trading medical equipment with doctors on his travels and once he joins the group he is Fairy Tail’s medic. 

Different S-class wizards have different theories: 

Laxus - thinks he is just shy weirdo

Erza - thinks he is hiding something

Mirajane - thinks he is paranoid

Makarov - refuses to assume anything

He avoids interacting with humans as much as possible but still needs the guild to gather information and guidance of where to go.

Laxus isn't here because Laxus is already on the team for predetermined timeline reasons. This is to fill in the other 5 positions.
