you're open about your otherkinity at college, right? do you have any tips for people looking to do the same? I've been trying to think of some way I can be more open about it, but I'm really not sure how to.
Yep, I am! And err, to be honest, people mostly found out through my shitty jokes and puns. So I’m not sure my advice will be the best, but I’ll try.
(If there are two things I cannot resist, it’s jokes about me being queer, and jokes about me being otherkin. The opportunities for groan-worthy puns are endless, my friends.)
Beyond that, it also sometimes just gets brought up in my classes, given that I’m a religious studies major and my otherkinity is directly intertwined with my religious/spiritual beliefs and cultural identity. So sometimes that’s a thing. I was also the head of a club on campus for a while that would do public Q&As for people who wanted to learn more about otherkinity (and to dispel certain myths about it being an LGBT identity and the ilk)--I only stopped because the head officer went off the deep end and started hardcore stalking people, which was...bad.
Honestly, a lot of being open about it has mostly been being honest about it. People will ask about my theta-delta necklace, or I’ll make a pun and someone who isn’t around me regularly will give me a quizzical look, or etc. I just don’t work to hide that part of my identity from people, and my friends are all aware that it’s an important part of who I am as a person. I also ended up being friends with other ‘kin on campus by sheer virtue of being forward about my identity, which has been nice (excluding that one head officer, they were an outlier!) and has also helped.
