Ninjago theory/headcanon: What if Mystake is the FSM's mother?
Other then stating that the FSM is the child of both Dragon and Oni blood, and the implications of the Firstborn. We don't know much about his heritage, and I don't see many people discussing it. Folks have been theorizing about who his children's mother is, if they have one, however no one askes the questions who the FSM's parents were. And he is practically confirmed to have two parents, he couldn't be a half-breed with only one parent.
So, this question got me thinking. Then while re-watching Season 9/Hunted I wondered, why did Mystake turn on her fellow Oni? If she said it was because she fell in love with NInjago, the FSM's creation, but why would she have looked that closely at something a glorified living weapon made. Unless she had a hand in making it.
We know that Mystake isn't above playing spy. What if the Oni sent her in to spy on the dragons during the war? However while in disguise, she turns traitor, falling in love with one of the Firstborn's children, or maybe the mother of dragons herself (The Oni are shape-shifters, Gender can kind of be thrown out the window). Leading to the birth of the FSM.
If this did happened, maybe Mystake managed to keep it secret and volunteered to be on the mission to capture the FSM after he fled. Wanting to keep and eye on her son. Or maybe the Omega sent her on the mission in order to prove her loyalty to the Oni after discovering she had turned traitor and had a half dragon child. Dubbing her, Mystake, or 'mistake'. So that every Oni would know her sin.
If the FSM was her son it would give her more reason to turn on her fellow generals, since she would be protecting her child. It would also explain the distance relationship she has with Garmadon and Wu. If she were their mother like people have theorized, she'd probably be more involved in their lives especially after the FSM's death. She doesn't seem like the kind of person to sit around and let her child be poisoned by a snake. However if she was more distantly related, like a Grandmother, it would make more sense. Likely it would be awkward for her to step in any more then she did, since the FSM probably spent the majority of his youth with the Dragons. It's an estranged relationship even if Mystake deeply cared for the FSM. Due to this distance its likely that she felt she didn't have much say in Garmadon's and Wu's lives. If they came to her, she'd help without question, but otherwise she just watches from a distance.
She only really gets involved in things when Lloyd, her possible great-grandson, doesn't have anyone else to turn too. Maybe she felt guilty about him getting wrapped in Tomorrow's Tea, Maybe she didn't want her family to suffer from her inaction any more once Wu was de-aged and Garmadon was mutated into something that reminded her of her people. Utter destructive monsters. Something she never wanted any of her family to become after learn you could be so much more in a world of peace.
On top of all that, her Oni form seems to share a lot of physical similarities with Garmadons, ei the white markings and rib structure, something even called out in the wiki, suggesting a genetic connection between the two.
Well at least that's what I figure. I'm probably incorrect, but its fun thought to chew on.
Tea has been restocked.
How does Inverse!Lloyd find out Mystake is his Grandmother? Does she just tell him? Does the Inverse Team ever find out Lloyd's hideout there? Does Garmadon tell the team she's his mother? How different is Lloyd's relationship with his parents?
How does Inverse!Lloyd find out Mystake is his Grandmother? Does she just tell him? <- she has no reason to omit that info here so yes!
Does the Inverse Team ever find out Lloyd's hideout there? <- I'd like to say yes but I also think it'd be really funny if the team kept cropping up there for teas and just barely miss Lloyd ever time
Does Garmadon tell the team she's his mother? <- Morro knows ahead of time but ofc Toby is the first to try and get to the bottom of how old she must be
How different is Lloyd's relationship with his parents? <- Well from the start they wouldn't be torn apart by the 'Father vs Son' thing anymore so they would still be together and trying to break the 'curse' on Lloyd, but when Lloyd learns about the curse (accidentally from Misako), that's when he runs away (and inadvertently misses out on meeting Nya initially rip). But up until Lloyd gets hit with the world's worst fate he's vibing pretty well with the fame (although he is pretty intrigued by his mysterious and banished Uncle Wu...plot thread where he wants to be like Wu this time around and that's part of why he pushes into being 'gold and evil' when he runs off to Darkley's? Perchance.)

In the beginning of Ninjago, the Overlord and the First Spinjitzu Master created everything. I've basically explained all the lore I want to explore about this in my other notes, although some of the new details I'm going to add here might go against some of the other stuff I wrote. I can't really remember. But either way, let's discuss the story of the Overlord's twin sons and if his ex-wife, the teamage oni Mystake. It's a story not many people know, because it's so old that very few people can even remember hearing about it. If any even can remember.
While the First Spinjitzu Master eventually settled down with a human woman and had Garmadon and Wu, the Overlord was also having children of his own. The Overlord fell in love with Mystake, an Oni. The Oni were a harsh race that existed long before the First Spinjitzu Master and the Overlord collectively chose to create the world of Ninjago. The Oni come from a land that's as old as the gods themselves. Are they gods as well? Not really. It's complicated, but they're both related to and distinct from the celestial spirits known as the gods. The Oni were created by one of the earlier gods, one of the few that's older than even the First Spinjitzu Master and the Overlord. The Oni were the first race of beings created by any of the gods, and that would explain their very…simplistic lives. Capable of reason but mostly reliant on strength and barbarism, the Oni live in their own private dimension of caves and eternal darkness. The only light comes from the torches in the caves.
While the Oni were a violent race who typically kept to themselves, the Overlord won his way into their lands by demonstrating his powerful strength and cunning. He was a god who was told he fated to become the mortal enemy of his brother, the First Spinjitzu Master. So he felt a kindred spirit with the Oni, who were viewed as barbaric half formed monstrosities. They were a failed attempt at creating life, something nowhere near worthy of being associated with the celestial realm. The Oni were banished to their underground dimension so they'd never be able to interact with the gods.
The Overlord told the Oni about the realm of the gods, and he told his brother the FSM about this too. The First Spinjitzu Master and the Overlord were also victims of the gods. Their "parents" raised them to hate each other, but they wouldn't do it. They rebelled against the celestial realms rules, and accidentally helped to incite a massive war between the celestial spirits and the Oni. Desperate to escape, the FSM and the overlord created Ninjago to be their private refuge from the world.
As for the gods and the oni…the gods mostly all died. Around 20 of them survived (including the FSM and the Overlord in that 20), and the survivors are responsible for the creation of all the different realms. And as for the ones that died…well, they say they became the elements that the elemental masters now wield. And the Oni…well, the Oni fought until the last man. When the war ended, they were almost all dead. They say that a secret contingent of Oni survived and are still planning their second wave of revenge from within the wreckage of their cave dimension, but nobody can tell whether it's the true or just a rumour.
Anyways, here's how Mystske enters the picture. Before the war ended, the Oni knew that some of the cowardly gods had fled, though. So they sent a scouting team to pursue some of them. Mystake was one of the soldiers in this scouting party. She was one of the few with second doubts about apprehending the gods, since she was someone who had befriended the Overlord when he visited their realm. She knew he cared about their rights, and she didn't want to be just as evil as the gods were by punishing the few for the crimes of the many. When she saw the beauty of early Ninjago, she turned on her squadron and helped the First Spinjitzu Master and the Overlord protect their newly made realm. From then on, Mystake was practically the third parent of Ninjago. She was there for it all.
Mystake and the Overlord were married long before the First Spinjitzu Master ever settled down. They never had kids until close to the end of their relationship, though. They were too busy in a long courtship where they wandered Ninjago and marveled at it's splendor. But this serenity was not to last. The Overlord had his preordained destiny, set in stone by the other gods. And discovering Mystake having a private date with the FSM was just the beginning of the end for the Overlord. He got increasingly paranoid, until he eventually created the Stone Army and began waging war against his brother. It was only a few months before the war began that Mystake became pregnant with the Overlord's children. For a few months, they were so happy about it. But then the jealousy and paranoia kicked in, and their family unit was destroyed.
The Stone Army were only the Overlord's second creation (he'd helped to create the Serpentine too), but the Stone army were the first race he created without anyone else's help. They were his children, an embodiment of him and his dark destiny. As the First Spinjitzu Master married, settled down and had children, the Overlord and the Stone army waged war across the land.
Mystake was his captive in this time, but she was not his slave. In her private chambers, she continued researching the elements. She began her research in peacetime with the Overlord and the FSM, but now she was forced to continue it alone. Her research led her to begin creating her magical teas, the teas which would make her famous. Tea already existed, but Mystake enhanced them with elemental powers and magics. She is a teamage, a brewer of destiny and fortune.
When Mystake looked out of the windows in her room and saw the devastation her husband was causing the realm, she knew she couldn't let her xhikdren be raised here. She had invented a new tea: Tomorrow's Tea, a tea which could (at this early stage in the tea's history) send you forwards or backwards in time. She used her tea to send her two children (both infants) centuries into the future, then she decided to remake her recipe so that nobody but her could ever be able to mess with the elements of nature like that. Little did she know, her children were going to grow up to be the elemental masters of time.
Mystake stays in her time though, and she only gets free once the FSM defeats the Overlord and seals him away. While the two of them are fighting on the dark island, Mystake breaks out of her room and escapes. The two men who used to mean so much to her never got to learn she was still alive, but she always thought of them as she rebuilt her life. She found herself a tiny corner in a secluded little village, and she runs a private tea shop there. By day, she just sells tea. But by night, she practices her brewing and teamaking skills. Mystake first appeared to Garmadon and Wu ages ago. They know her quite well, although they vowed to let her keep her secrets and privacy. But yeah, they know some of her secrets.
Mystake stays out of the conflicts in Ninjago for the most part, only getting involved when she's forcibly dragged into it. And her children and her ex husband teaming up to try and destroy Ninjago…well, that makes her take notice. She becomes a lead character briefly in seasons 9 and 10, helping to defeat her children and her ex. Her tea comes in awful handy, because she uses it to degage Krux and Acronix back into babies as young as they were when she first threw them into the future all those years ago. Now that she's older and wiser, she'll raise them right. Her potions also help in other ways, but this is the big one.
So yeah, Mystake is an Oni. But her biggest skill is that of being a teamage, and she's basically the Misako to the FSM's Wu and the Overlord's Garmadon. Hey, wait… Mystake. Misako. Huh. Maybe I just made them so similar because I conflated their names in my head.
Would the minifigure design of the FSM be something like his appearance when he first met Mystake?
Yeah! Definitely young-er for sure!
