Honestly it’s been about a month or so and of like feeling really out of place or like I’ve entered a culture I don’t understand so I think I’m going to stop posting on the web novel/serialized fiction sites.
I just don’t think my book belongs there?? I’m struggling with where it does belong overall to be honest genre wise, it’s like a weird mismash of fantasy and cyber punk but with multiple romantic, platonic and familial subplots with a cohesive coming of age through line but it’s not a romance, it’s not a coming of age, it’s not a found family, but it’s also not not any of those things??!?
But all the web novel spaces seem to mostly be LitRPG, power fantasy, iskeai stuff or very specific and targeted romance tropes (Werewolfer shifter dark romance with a curvy protagonist and enemies to lovers that takes place on a boat in Tuscany and One Direction is also there) or Manga/Anime light novel or web comic style books and that’s just not at all what I’m doing and there are thousands of them.
These sites also just make me feel like I’m hustling to get readers or rather, that I should be or number no go up, THE NUMBER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT, and that’s definitely not something I’m into. And mailing lists are so goddamn annoying to setup unless you want to give your subscriber’s emails to literally everyone on the planet via some third party company.
I just wanna write my story man, let people read it for free, no credits or points or ink or subscriptions or whatever the fuck, and if people wanna support me further for like extra chapters or just cause they wanna or to make like requests or whatever that’s cool but not required to read it. If no one reads it, also cool, I’m having fun with these characters and getting them out of my head.
So I think, for my own brain I’m going to just post on the website, AO3 cause it’s my heart, and have a Patreon for the extra shit people may be into or for an easy way to subscribe/talk to me or each other etc, and just not fuck with any of this extra nonsense.
