I got a crook in my neck. I can’t look left. I have to turn my whole body around to see what’s coming to the left of me. I have to stop my entire body. Shuffle to the left to turn around. Nope. No car is coming. Cha can proceed. It’s a sight to behold. I’m sure. I can’t run right now. I’m walking kinda funny too. Like a swagged out limp. At least, this is what I tell myself. I’m out here walking funny. Looking funny. Sitting funny. Just all around wonky. I have a soon to be 14 year old who doesn’t like me much. Turns out, “I ruin everything”. To be fair, I can imagine how hard it is to have turned 13 in the height of a pandemic and still be in said pandemic and about to turn 14. Maybe I too would think my mother “ruins everything”. Maybe there’d be little that I’d like or enjoy. Which got me thinking about us. All of us. We are all in our separate lives, giving our best to life. Not exactly knowing what we’re doing but following what feels right. What seems right. What seems like the best side of right we know. And, in doing our best side of right. We get it wrong some times. We give it our all some times. We get gut punches like, “you ruin everything” some times. And, every time, we keep showing up. Cause life requires us to. Even when we want to hibernate. With a hot compress on our neck. What I’m trying to say is, sometimes we wake up with a crook in our neck from doing absolutely nothing, but sleeping. We walk funny. We move funny. We bang our heads on immovable walls. And in doing so, we keep living. We keep reaching. We keep hoping. We keep making memories. We keep pursing be us. Being us may look different on different days. But we are still us. Being us doesn’t change. Just like being brave feels different than it looks. Being us and doing a hell of a job, looks different than it feels. It feels like my wonky neck. It looks like a girl with a crook her neck. Who walks funny on her morning “run”. But what it never stops being, is just people doing their best.
