Dean knew the rhythm of Casā footsteps from the kitchen all the way to their bedroom. Knew it better than the pulse of his own heart; as familiar to him as the scent of the warm coffee that carried with his husband every morning like clockwork. He found himself smiling against his pillow, feeling the early sunshine through the lake house window heat the frosty February air.
So the routine goes; any minute now Cas would pause to bump the door open with his pajama-clad butt, scooting backward into their bedroom, two coffees in hand. Dean would fake the grouchy attitude as if the gentle interruption had pulled him from sleep. As if, minutes earlier, Cas hadnāt waited until his spidey senses told him Deanās REM sleep was done and he was ready for his daily stubbled kiss at the back of his neck. For the arm that tightened around his waist, sinking suggestively lower until Dean cracked open an eyelid. Falling for the same old trick every day, before Cas would rise his heavenly ass out of bed to start on coffee. Leaving Dean tethered between the land of sleep and this world of dreams.
Same old, same old.
And wasnāt that a hell of a thing.
Dean scooched over to Casā side of the bed. The warmth had faded but it was the scent he chased; like rich earth pounded by the heavy rain of a thunderstorm, the charged promise of lightning still to come. Like honey and ether and so likeĀ home, Dean could drown himself in it. Smother himself in his husbandās pillow with a smile on his face and a bulge in his pants.
And so, it began.
The gentle clink of the spoon dropped into the sink. The ceramic scuffling on the kitchen countertop. The first bare footstep on the warm wooden floor.
Three years of this, Dean thought, and he knew he could go a thousand more.
A squeaking sound broke the routine, and Dean perked up his bedhead to listen to the audible eye roll and soft sigh that accompanied it. The footsteps and squeaking drew nearer, and Dean propped himself up on an arm to watch the regularly scheduled show.
The ass that greeted him was familiar, but Deanās eyes bulged out of his head like Donald Duck at the first sight of Daisy. Cas backed into the room, letting the door swing softly shut behind him.
Deanās husband paused, breakfast tray in hand and a look of genuine surprise on his face that quickly morphed into a feigned innocence.
āSweetheart,ā Dean managed to say with a tongue that now weighed an ACME ton. āAre you wearingĀ leather pants?āĀ He was dreaming, right? Had to be. If the next words out of Cas' mouth wereĀ "tell me about it, stud"Ā in Olivia Newton-John's voice that would surely confirm it. A laugh threatened to burst all the way from his belly, born of shock more than anything, because this was Cas.Ā His Cas. In tight leather pants. Like he was Jon Bon fucking Jovi and Dean was eighteen, alone in his motel room and realising some shit.Ā
But Cas ignored the question, setting the breakfast tray safely on the bedside table. When he turned to find Deanās gaze still locked on his broad thighs, mouth hanging open like it didnāt know where to start, he placed his hands on his hips.
āThe third wedding anniversary gift is leather, is it not?ā
Dean glanced up from his stupor, feeling his heart swell like a damn balloon at his husbandās words.
Leather. Anniversary. Right.
How Cas heard "leather" and thought "pants"... actually, he didn't need to know how or why, because this was happening. Somehow this was real life.
Dean licked his lips. Didnāt mean to, but he did.
Heād tell Cas about the new leather couch heād secretly set up in the Cas Cave later. Right nowā¦
āThe salesperson insisted this was the perfect gift,ā Cas frowned down at himself. āPerhaps this was a mistake.ā
āWhuaa-ā Dean started, tangling in the sheets as he struggled to sit upright. āNo, no, theyāre ā hell of a ā gotta tip the guy⦠god, Cas.ā Only the need to defend these pants with his life gave Dean the strength to tear his gaze from them a second time.
Heād expected to find that frown he loved so much ā the one that crinkled Casā brow, and tugged his soft lips into a flat line. Instead, his husband grinned at him, eyes blazing with that smugness that was the bane of Deanās life.
Son of a bitch. He played him.
āHappy anniversary, Dean,ā Cas said, stepping forward to crawl on his knees across the mattress, caging Dean in between his thighs.
Dean pulled him closer, sunlight glinting on the band of his wedding ring as he ran a hand through Casā hair. Three years of this. Already three.Ā OnlyĀ three.
And he could never have enough.
āHappy anniversary, Cas.ā The words were a whisper against his husbandās lips.

Blue eyes were fixed, calm and warm. Dean raised a hand nervously in an offer to shake it, but he just stared, confused.
āHe doesnāt know much about humans, yet,ā John laughed. He crouched until he and Dean were eye level. āItāll be up to you to teach him.ā

Summary: Dean knows what happens if they lose to Lucifer. He's seen what becomes of his brother. Of Castiel. He knows the kind of man he's destined to become when the world dies because of him. It was always bigger than them.
Whatever you do, we will always end up here.
While Dean grieves for the brother imprisoned in his own body by the devil, Castiel hunts for the father who brought him back from the dead only to abandon them all. But the world is slowly ending around them, and sooner or later they have to accept that here at the end of all things, all they've got left is each other.
It's the end, baby. There's nothing they can do but brace for the storm.
Chapter 3: Deus In Absentia (6.6k)
Excerpt:
āThe hellās that supposed to mean?ā Deanās mattress squeaked, his voice growing closer as though heād turned toward the wall.
It means, Cas thought, that Dean would be crowned a saint for his selflessness, if such positions still mattered. āIt means the only person standing in the way of your happiness is yourself.ā
Dean scoffed, and Cas flinched at the distinct sound of the cap of the whisky bottle Dean kept in his nightstand. āYeah, thatās rich from the guy who spent a billion years thinkinā god gives a crap about any of us. Where is he, Cas? Huh? Still think heās got some secret up his sleeve to fix this shit? This was his plan, man. Iām āā
āYou certainly know a lot about keeping secrets.ā Cas knew it was a low blow, given the truth Dean had told him earlier that day. Back when the world was theirs and the guilt of his survival wasnāt bleeding Deanās heart so badly he refused to really live.
āFuck you, man,ā Dean muttered. āAināt my fault youāre goin' through some reverse angel puberty crap.ā
āDo you suffer these indignities for some larger purpose? Misery isnāt a currency for forgiveness.ā Cas kept pushing. He needed Dean to fight back. Needed him to say he didnāt regret what theyād done. That this wasnāt the end of them. Needed to keep him talking so that he wasnāt swallowed by the silence of his monstrous guilt.
āWell fuck me, Father, for I have sinned. This aināt confession, Cas. Shut the fuck up.ā

āMmph.ā
āNot a chance, angel,ā Dean pried off the pillow Cas was attempting to smother his own head beneath. For a dude who not so long ago had no need of sleep, Dean had a hell of a time getting his boyfriend out of bed in the mornings.
Cas lay on his stomach, face planted into the mattress and not in a sexy way. Early morning sunlight cast a shadow of the beaded curtain across the bare, tanned skin of his back. Dean admired the taut muscles, trailing a finger along Casā spine.
āDo not-ā
Dean smirked, ignoring the command and smacking Casā ass good and hard above the thin blanket. He didnāt need to see the eye roll that followed; heād long since developed a spidey sense for it.
āRise and shine, sweetheart. Weāre goinā outta town today.ā
āNnnmmhhh.ā
It was Deanās turn to roll his eyes. He padded to the dresser, flicking through the precious gift that was his tape collection. He jammed Iron Maiden into the busted old radio, gave it a good shake ānā slap to cut out the rattling, and boom. He glanced over his shoulder, peeking nonchalantly at the angel laying dead weight on their crappy little spring bed. He bit the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling as he slowly twisted the dial, cranking up the volume loud enough for Wasted Years to wake half the camp.
Cas didnāt flinch.
No dice, huh?
He glanced around the room. Not like there was any coffee ā even that healthy sludge theyād looted had run out days ago. Supplies were getting harder to come by. Dean thought back to the gross lukewarm coffees heād fuelled himself with at motels over the years. Heād kill for just a drop right about now. Seriously ā put the right guy in front of him right now and heād do it. His stomach growled at the thought of breakfast.
Supply run. Right.
āFace up. Make your stand. Realize youāre living in the golden years.ā
Dean snorted. What was that saying? About wishing you knew you were in the good old days when they were still happening? The golden years were dead and gone. It was nothinā but croats and the misery of a vast unending universe that was quickly depleting in supply of coffee and alcohol and all the good crap that made life bearable.
āSo understand. Donāt waste your time always searching for those wasted years.ā
Dean turned fully to face the graceless angel rotting away on their bed. Casā hair had gotten longer; the dark mess haloing his grouchy head. Dean knew the stubborn bastard was as wide awake as he was.
He peeled off his shirt, chucking it haphazardly on the floor in the general direction of the laundry pile ā which honestly took up most of the room at this point. At least that incense crap Cas insisted on burning drowned out the smell of old blood and bad weed.
Dean made his way back to the bed, arms folded as he frowned down at his boyfriend.
Cas mumbled something shaped like ādonāt even think about itā, tensing his ass preemptively for another smack. Instead, Dean plopped down on top of him, getting a face full of dirty angel hair and pushing a soft āoofā out of Casā lungs. His jeans dug into his hipbones as he squirmed against Casā ass.
He was being a shit, but it got the job done. Finally, Cas turned his head to the side, cracking open one eye to squint at the man laying on top of him. Despite the annoyance in his eyes, Cas reached for Deanās wrists, pulling his boyfriendās arms tighter around himself in place of a blanket.
Dean hummed contentedly, nuzzling his cheek against Casā shoulder blade.
āHow long do we have?ā
āHm?ā Dean mumbled against the warmth of Casā skin. Even despite the crap heād been smoking, the lack of showers ā especially after all that āyogaā theyād been practicing ā Cas still smelled like Cas. Like a thunderstorm. Like home.
āUntil we head out?ā Cas twined his fingers around Deanās own, turning their hands so he could read Deanās watch. Going by the deep suffering sigh, Dean had to guess it was soon. Which felt like a damn shame despite his earlier resolve to get the hell out of bed and get this stupid trip over with so he could come home, wash the grime off his skin, fill his belly full of stale pie and warm beer and kiss his best friend until he forgot all about the end of the world. Cas was so warm.
Cas rolled to his side, almost throwing Dean off the bed entirely. The dude may have lost his angel powers, but that unholy strength still lingered. Still stirred something in Deanās belly with every reminder of how Cas can and has thrown him around like a ragdoll. Cas twisted and grabbed hold of Dean just in time, pulling him close and humming contentedly as his hand fell on Deanās shoulder. Casā fingers slotted perfectly over the handprint heād once left on Dean when heād gripped him tight and raised him from perdition.
There was that look again. The same look heād gotten after accidentally leaving a hickey on Deanās throat after swearing he was being careful. Like he was both proud and ashamed of it. Mesmerised and awed at how Deanās body was a trophy collection just for him. Like it could ever be enough to mark him with evidence of how loved he was. To show how wholly Dean belonged to this dork.
But behind it all, there was a sadness that seemed almost ancient.
Shit had been hard, and Dean had taken it a damn sight harder at the start of all this. Heād been angry ā stubborn and selfish and ready to kill anything and everything in his path as if it could ever make a dent in undoing his failures. It took a long time to break out of his head and accept that this was it. This was the end, baby. And it wasnāt just Dean that was suffering. It hadnāt been easy on Cas either. Too much of that was on Dean. Heād watched Cas burn himself out until there was next to nothing left. Not even a smile to light those once glowing eyes some days. Dean had lost his brother, but somewhere along the way, Cas had lost himself. Both were unfathomable in ways Dean couldnāt stand to think about.
It'd taken even longer for them to get their crap together and do something about this thing between them. By the time theyād snapped, neither could recall whoād initiated the first brush of lips on whiskey-stained lips. It felt inevitable. Maybe it was. Maybe the world would have been all rainbows and rock ānā roll if itād happened sooner.
Didnāt matter anyway.
āFace up! Make your stand! Realize youāre living in the golden years, hey.ā
The mattress buzzed with the radioās vibration, but before Dean could scowl at the lyrics, Casā lips pressed against his own. He was always gentle at first, like he was giving Dean a chance to back out. And always, Deanās heart kicked up a storm against his ribs. It didnāt matter if it was the first, the fifth, or the thousandth time ā nothing felt like this. In Casā arms, in their own bed, nothing outside these walls mattered for that moment.
Dean deepened the kiss, looping one arm around Casā back to pull the angel closer, and pressing his other hand to Casā cheek. Heād kissed guys before, sure, but something about feeling the prickly beard growing in on Casā face made him feel like a damn teenager again. He was still coming to terms with the messed-up situation he and Cas had found themselves in. But any doubt he had slipped away into the recesses of his mind when they were close like this.
They were both breathless as they crawled out of bed, kiss-swollen lips desperately gulping down a shared bottle of water. Cas donned one of Deanās old Black Sabbath shirts, despite the stink of his sweat still clinging to the fabric. Dean wondered if Cas did it on purpose. Heād noticed Cas always wore Deanās clothes when the day ahead held a little more risk than usual. When the chances of getting separated werenāt exactly slim to none. Sure, it was only a supply run. But theyād lost good people before for easier crap. A lot of good people.
It was hard to believe it was only a year or so ago that Cas would appear to him sometimes in the ungodly hours of the night, when Dean couldnāt sleep. Didnāt matter where he was, or what fresh hell the world was spinning out just for him, if Dean stepped out into the night for a smoke on the hood of his car, Cas would be there. Like clockwork.
āThose things will kill you,ā heād say, in that toneless matter-of-fact voice that used to make Dean want to grab him by his stupid coat and shake him. Didnāt matter if he was on his final drag or if his shaking hands were still struggling to light the cigarette, one snap of Casā fingers and the thing would go poof. Gone. The whole pack suddenly empty in his pocket, too.
Now, Cas leaned against the outside of their cabin, eyes closed as he inhaled a drag of whatever was going to get him through the day. Dean tried not to stare ā not at the small āoā of Casā lips, or the bob of his Adamās apple. Not at the way his hair curled inward a little at his earlobes, or the way his shirt hugged tight against Casā broad shoulders. Not at the lithe hand close to his lips that held a weak imitation of the grace long burnt to cinders, or that small frown between Casā brows that always appeared when the hit just wasnāt enough.
It was tacky to say Cas was his whole world when, letās face it, the world wasnāt exactly up to scratch in comparison. But Dean adored him. He loved Cas more than he could stand it. Hung on every word, every graceless movement, every sly smile and every puff of smoke that blew from Casā mouth.
The guys would pull up any second now to pick them up, but Dean couldnāt help it. His heart was hammering as he stepped into Casā space, gently lifting the blunt from between his fingers. Cas slowly opened his eyes, curious and patient.
He didnāt protest when Dean stubbed out the blunt against the wood of their cabin.
āThose thingsāll kill you,ā Dean said, willing a smile on his face that didnāt meet his eyes.
Cas smiled down at his feet as the first rumble of the truckās tyres sounded on the gravel road. He brought Dean's hand to his lips, peppering each knuckle with a kiss. Only met Dean's gaze as he planted a lingering, reverent kiss to the back of his palm. āThereās nothing bold enough left to kill me now, my love," he said, kissing Dean's lips quick and stealthy while they still had the chance. "Itās just you and me and the end of the world.ā
Excerpt:Ā Still struggling with the fallout of his Godstiel days, Cas breaks down after a hunt. Hearing Dean's longing behind the comfort of his words, they finally find some much needed closure.
It was a ruin, this old church. Its structural integrity lost to time and the elements as much to decades of vandals. The cruel irony of natureās beauty never ceased to amuse the angel. He stared around the dilapidated building: the insides lost to creeping vines and crumbling stone. If Castiel concentrated, he imagined he could see through the bends of time to when this place stood tall and beautiful. Built for worship.
āIām your new God. A better one. So, you will bow down and profess your love onto me, your Lord. Or I shall destroy you.ā
The roof had long ago collapsed; the shattered glass of the windows turned to dust and scattered to the winds. Where wooden pews once filled the open space, now there was only trash. Cans of spray paint and empty liquor bottles. Not a drop of holy water left.
Castiel tipped back his head to the open sky above. Moonlight bathed his skin; a pale halo on his dark crown. It was a brilliant night; the youthful stars above watching over him more faithfully than he ever had over his human charge.
Heād failed Dean. Failed humanity on the whim of playing god. He was no master of the grand plan. He was not righteous or just. What he was, was fateless.
Faithless.
Deanās footsteps were a distant thing. They might as well have been far away in another world as tears fell from the angelās eyes. Heād been so sure ā so certain that he was doing the right thing. That he was on the right path. Once again, heād failed.
Itād been an average hunt today; a werewolf case he and Dean had taken care of only hours after arriving in this town. Castiel had the distinct impression that Dean was coddling him, for whatever reason he could not personally comprehend. Dean should have washed his hands of him. Left him to rot for the trouble caused.
It was strange, he supposed, how he and Dean had betrayed each other on almost inconceivable levels and yet there was no one the angel trusted more. And besides his brother, Cas knew that Dean felt the same of him.
What he didnāt understand was why.
Heād been loyal once. Feared and respected. Had completed what was perhaps the most important task in heavenās history in rescuing Dean from hell. But every star goes dark eventually, and Castiel suspected his latest failure was as akin to a supernova as he could possibly manage.
Starlight glistened in his tears as they fell in earnest. His shoulders shook, the guilt of his trueform too large for his mortal form to bear.
