He just lost his mother in the most horrific and brutal way possible, three years after his brother died in his arms, which in itself was a year from watching his sister get ripped in half by an ogre. And following that up, that horrible nightmare of a quest where his Frankensteined mother died while he watched helplessly, he went to Aveline’s office and yelled at her that she should have done more to prevent this, because he needed a scapegoat—this despite the fact that my m!Hawke is rarely aggressive or even direct. Because the alternative would be blaming himself even more than he already did.

So then he thought, alright, I should apologize to Aveline. Help her work things out with Donnic. So he went to the Wounded Coast, intending to help her with the patrols, except surprise! Slavers were there to reclaim Fenris, and what could they do except pivot immediately for the caves and track down Hadriana? And during that quest, Fenris was more bitter and rage-filled and pointed than Hawke had ever seen him, more confused and broken-hearted, barely a shell of a person. Fenris exploded at Hawke, told him not to touch him, told him that magic spoiled everything. Including, it would seem, Hawke himself.

Just a little First Talon AU where Lucanis accepts the mantle long-term (not my headcanon for my Rookcanis pairing) and pays good money to get Rook’s face painted. Multiple times.
