And what could you possibly offer me in return for such a....consideration? I offer you the death of Matt Murdock.
You're an attorney...You don't get to play judge and jury.
guyssssss i’m almost at 1k followers
Hi everybody! I’ve been reading comics for about a year now and I thought it was time to make a comic rec list. I’ve seen a couple of these floating around but they’re mostly all recommending the same few popular comics series over and over. Fraction’s Hawkeye, Young Avengers, etc. So here’s a list of comics I’ve really enjoyed and I tried to include some volumes that don’t get as much love as they should. This list includes both Marvel and DC.
DC
Blue Beetle Volume 8 (2006-2009): I love comic books with latinx main characters, and this is no exception. Jaime Reyes is such a relatable character I absolutely adore him. This series is so good at putting a twist on the traditional “teenager suddenly gets superpowers and struggles to maintain a secret identity” plot by actually incorporating his family and friends. Jaime is given a wonderful support system and the series doesn’t get dragged down with the typical teenage angst. All of the supporting characters are complex and well developed and don’t rely on mexican gang stereotypes. The story takes place in El Paso/Ciudad Juárez, and one of the issues is completely in Spanish. Warning: do NOT read the nu52 version. ignore at all costs.
The Flash (2011-): What can I say, I love Barry Allen. The art by Manapul is fabulous, however they do switch artists late in the series and if it wasn’t for Barry I would have stopped right then.
Gotham Academy (2014-): This is a relatively new comic series with only six issues currently out. The art is adorable and the story is mysterious and interesting. The protagonists are all very young, and Damian Wayne will be joining the series with the next issue. The story is told through the perspective of Olive, and the narrative offers a unique view on Batman. I’m curious to find out more about their relationship, a lot hasn’t been revealed to the readers yet.
Green Lantern (and all related titles): Everything. Just read all of Geoff Johns’ run. Hal Jordan. My son.
New Guardians (2011-): Kyle Rayner is everything to me. He’s tied right up there with Hal Jordan as one of my favorite characters in DC. I wish he was more popular within the fandom, he could be such a big Mexican American comic icon. But this volume deals with his journey as a White Lantern and heavily features some other great characters like Saint Walker and Carol Ferris.
Superman (2011-): I’m obligated to rec Superman comics. Clark is such a nerd and I’m in love with him.
Secret Six (2014-): Only two issues out so far so not much to catch up on. The plot is really mysterious, even I’m not really sure what’s completely going on. It’s written by Gail Simone, though, so I’m really excited about where this is heading
MARVEL
All New Ghost Rider (2014-2015): Robbie Reyes. He is my son. Another really well done comic with a relatable latinx main character that subverts a lot of the stereotypes and has gorgeous art. His relationship with his brother and that part of the plot just kills me it really does. The series also includes an appearance by Johnny Blaze. While this series is over and only includes 12 issues, Robbie is set to appear in Secret Wars.
Ant-Man (2015-): I think it’s really funny and it’s clearly the tone that they’re gonna try to bring with the new film. If you want to get some experience with Scott Lang before the film, I suggest reading this comic, it’s really enjoyable.
Captain Marvel: She’s one of my favorite marvel characters so of course I have to rec her two volumes written by Kelly Sue DeConnick. She’s such an inspiration I would do anything for her. And the art is always gorgeous, which is a plus, especially the arc in 2013-4 run in which she struggles with her flying ability.
Daredevil: My url is mattmrdk. He is my favorite comics character of all time. Of course I have to rec everything with him. Everything. From issue #1 to present day. If I gave a summary of why I loved him we’d be here all day. I started out with Mark Waid’s run on volumes 3 and 4 before backtracking to read volumes 2 and 1, and I would highly recommend that order.
Star Wars (and all related titles): If you’re a star wars fan how are you not reading these comics? They’re flawless, especially Vader’s comic. So much emotion behind that mask I s2g. And if you’re a fan of the rebels tv show, Kanan is a must read.
Elektra (2014-2015): The art. The ART. The story is engaging and I love the portrayal of Elektra in this short series.
Moon Knight (2014-): Tbh, I can’t even tell you what is going on this series. I have no idea. It’s kind of confusing. But I love it. And the art is beautiful.
Ms. Marvel (2014-): Obviously.
Nova: Nova my children. Sam Alexander and Richard Rider are the lights of my life. If you like cosmic marvel I could not recommend enough reading Richard Rider’s run as Nova. All of it. Well, maybe not the New Warriors, but they play a significant role in Civil War (without him though so). But everything from Annihilation to now is flawless. Ignore anything Bendis may have written in the new GOTG volume. Just ignore it. Sam Alexander is a really good replacement Nova, even though I know a lot of people don’t like him. Again, I always support latinx main characters and his story is so engaging and you really feel for everything he’s going through. He’s 15 but he’s already and avenger and he’s featured in the All New All Different Avengers that premiered during FCBD this year so he’s on the rise!
She-Hulk (2014-2015): I was so sad this volume came to an end. The art was really interesting and the story was really good. A big arc was a legal battle between Jennifer and Matt concerning something Steve did pre-serum and is sooooo interesting I highly highly recommend.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (2015-): It’s super cute and funny what can I say.

And then she says a name.
The last name on Earth I’d ever expected to hear again.
MATT MURDOCK ; high school au
he gets up in the morning and goes to school at eight. he comes back to the orphanage at five-thirty and studies until eleven. his life is very structured and punctual, just as his old man would've wanted. on the streets, when they hear the tap-tap of his cane, people move aside and usually murmur about his father's death or his accident. at school, he's a straight a student with a full ride to columbia, is a member of several advocacy groups, and tutors other blind students. he blends in to the background most days, hanging with his best friend foggy nelson off in a corner. every sunday, he dutifully attends church at st. agnes and he's oh so good and oh so clean. he slips out his window and hits the streets at midnight. pulling a black mask over his eyes, he can hear sirens howling, a gun cocking, a child's cry on west 43rd; he can smell garbage wet from a recent downpour, cigar smoke, and he can taste copper in the air, -- his senses overload with the fear and pain seeping upwards to the surface from the city's entrails. he focuses on one heartbeat, shutting all other distractions and noises away, until he pinpoints the exact location. gotcha. sneakers slick against wet pavement, he turns and runs towards the cry.
