Oswald is incredibly extra about birthdays. He grew up with Gertrud making a huge deal out of his every year - even if it meant she went hungry, or had to do extra work to afford more little luxuries for her boy. Because of this, a high level of pampering is irrevocably tied to the deepest forms of love in Oswald's mind. So he needs to be showered with extra affection on that day as an adult by those he loves. Missing his birthday, or failing to make enough effort, hurts him deeply and feeds his intrusive thoughts that the person doesn't really care about him. But he also tries to do the same over-the-top celebrating for his few loved ones, with mixed results...

Ed was initially startled by all this, because he'd never had a family who celebrated his birthday or even valued his existence much, nor any friends or coworkers who cared beyond impersonal grocery store cards. As soon as they were friends, Oswald began his tradition of praise and spoiling on Ed's birthday, and the novelty never quite wore off for Ed, who slowly came around to seeing himself as worth such celebrations through the lens of Oswald's love. And being meticulous, Ed always remembers and concocts suitably ostentatious plans for Oswald, enjoying the fresh challenge of how to top last year's gifts and gestures. As they grow older, Oswald actually begins asking Ed to tone down his annual schemes, because he learns after years together that he doesn't need increasingly elaborate displays of affection to feel secure in Ed's commitment to him.
