What kind of feeling is it, when you miss someone you never knew?
You never really knew them, not personally.
A name, a voice, a precious interaction.
You hold these moments close to your heart.
A desperate grasp, fingers curled around memories that warp with time.
The version of them in your head is not who they really were.
There are parts of them that you have never seen.
There are parts of them that nobody has ever known.
Still, you grieve.
Because they changed your life. They might have even saved it.
You only wish that you could’ve done the same for them.
Someone like them didn’t deserve to die.
But they did anyway— and life moved on.
Another year passes without them, and their memory is slowly forgotten.
The Internet preserves their memory, but one day that too shall rot.
One day they will die their second death, nobody left to remember their name.
You can only wish that the day of their first death was not so early.
They deserved so much more than what they got.
…
I miss him. So much.
