The river flows past the village, and a tributary called Straw Beck also runs through the village before meeting the Swale. The area is popular for its scenic walks along the river, especially through the nearby meadows which are rich with wildflowers in late spring and early summer..Like so much in Swaledale, the name Muker is of Norse origin.
