Letting the Mountain Rise:
On Evolution, Grief, and the True Spirit of Einstürzende Neubauten
In the days since Alexander Hacke’s departure from Einstürzende Neubauten, waves of old grief have been rising in the fan community — grief that many thought long buried, but which now stirs again like a long-dormant fault line.
It is understandable.
Change always stirs grief.
Endings always awaken old echoes.
And for many longtime fans, this moment has opened the door not just to mourning Alex’s leaving —
but to revisiting the earlier departures of FM Einheit and Mark Chung decades ago.
For some, these departures — and the evolution of Neubauten’s sound — have been framed as a “loss of edge,” a betrayal of the raw chaos and violence that characterized the early years.
For some, anger still clings to the idea that Blixa Bargeld is to blame for these changes — for “softening,” for “going domestic,” for accepting accolades rather than wallowing eternally in the dark, in the rupture, in the collapse.
But here is the truth that needs to be spoken clearly now:
Neubauten was never about staying broken.
Neubauten was about what happens after the collapse.
⸻
Einstürzende Neubauten was born to destroy — yes.
To tear down.
To rip open the false skins of a wounded world.
But destruction was only the beginning.
True collapse makes way for creation.
True collapse is fertile.
True collapse demands that something new grow from the rubble.
Blixa — and Neubauten as it evolved —
answered that sacred demand.
It would have been easy — and marketable — to calcify into a permanent angry spectacle.
To sell endless repetitions of youthful rage.
To brand themselves as perpetual destroyers and never move forward.
But that was never the true spirit of Neubauten.
The real spirit of the band was about becoming.
About refusing to stay trapped in anyone’s expectation — even their own.
⸻
Volcanoes erupt — but over time, they become mountains.
Mountains become forests.
Forests become whole worlds, breathing with new life.
Blixa did not “sell out.”
He evolved.
He let the volcano breathe, cool, and become a mountain —
still shaped by fire, but capable of bearing entire living ecosystems on its back.
He dared to continue becoming, even when it meant losing people who only loved the fire, not the land it left behind.
He dared to explore absurdity, quietness, beauty, domesticity, sound and silence alike —
because art is not meant to stand still.
Because life is not meant to stay in endless rupture.
Because true evolution is not betrayal —
it is fulfillment.
⸻
It is not weakness to accept well-earned accolades after forty-five years of relentless innovation.
It is not failure to grow out of the angry young man phase and into something more vast, more strange, more fully human.
Blixa has honored his fellow musicians.
He has supported their other projects.
He has celebrated their individuality.
He has stayed loyal to the spirit of becoming, even when it meant being misunderstood or attacked.
And now, as Alex departs,
we are invited once again to choose:
• Do we cling to the ruins of the past and curse the living?
• Or do we honor the real spirit of Neubauten —
the spirit of collapse and creation —
and walk forward into the unknown?
⸻
There is no shame in grief.
We have a right to mourn.
But there is no honor in bitterness.
There is only the question:
Will we dare to grow, too?
Will we dare to love the mountain as much as we loved the volcano?
Einstürzende Neubauten continues to evolve.
Blixa continues to evolve.
And so, if we are true to the living spirit that first called us,
we must evolve too.
Not by forgetting what was —
but by carrying its fire forward
into the vast, beautiful, unknown landscape that is still unfolding.
(The collapse was never the end.
It was always the beginning.
And it still is.)
