What's actually brilliant about Moriarty the Patriot — and something other writers could learn from — is that all the characters are smart and capable whilst still feeling like real people, each with distinct personalities and temperaments. You look at them, and you can see that their words, actions, and thoughts do match their age. They behave like adults with adult problems. They look like adults as well. When you watch them, you don’t forget that they are grown people because they don't act like adolescents. That doesn't mean some of them are not awful, of course, but it is one of those rare cases in anime/manga where characters who are more or less on the same intellectual level don't all become the same type of 'genius' with identical dialogue. You do not get the usual edgy clichés: no 'I shall read this massive physics book overnight and return with a complete plan and my physics degree,' no 'obligatory chessboard battles,' no 'I am solving advanced mathematics in 0.1 seconds and you are not.' Those troupes always feel so fake and unnatural. Maybe it's just me, but I am not going to call a character smart simply because the canon says so. An author can assign an IQ of a thousand (I don't believe in the concept of iq anyway), but that doesn't make their character look intelligent — they just make everyone around them seem so dumb. On the other hand, even if the canon never explicitly states it, I'll still recognise a character as genuinely smart if they demonstrate it through their actions. The intelligence within the Moriarty's team feels alive, and that is the clearest sign of a truly thinking mind: the ability to learn, adapt, accept, and understand, rather than merely recall shallow facts from unrelated fields. And despite certain plot holes, there aren't truly serious missteps in how their plans or intelligence are handled. At least, I didn't notice the kind of glaring errors you often see in other anime — for instance, when a character suddenly acquires an inexplicable 'super ability' simply because the author needs some way to justify how they escaped unscathed. William has weaponised his intelligence so effectively that people often overlook how smart Sebastian Moran or Mycroft Holmes actually are. No one in Moriarty the Patriot is born with all the knowledge they possess, which is why they feel so natural and well-balanced. They have all studied and worked for it, and that is precisely why William merely smiles when he is called a genius.
Misunderstanding Paint Stains on Your Neck
Inadvertently, you have become the center of a small drama that resembles a theater scene 🎭: a red spot on your neck. It's not love, and it's not sin. Last night, you were so engrossed in your art project that you lost yourself in the deep red color of the canvas. You're probably leaning against that canvas, or perhaps rubbing a loose brush against your neck without realizing it. Because you're in a hurry, you might miss it when you look in the mirror. They might think it's a love bite (Hickey). A busy morning on the cobbled streets of London means you don't have time to check your reflection in the mirror. The remnants of a night spent with canvas, brushes, and dark red oil paint have unconsciously left a very suspicious mark on your neck.
══✩══╡°˖William James Moriarty
- The polite smile he usually wore suddenly disappeared. His red eyes that had always been calm and calculating suddenly became dark and sharp. William didn't immediately react with an outburst of anger, but the air around him seemed to drop several degrees.
- He stepped forward, closing the distance between you until you could feel the warmth of his body. With a white gloved hand, he gently touched the collar of your shirt, lifting it slightly to see the red stain more clearly.
- In his mind, London turned into a chessboard. And someone just touched the queen without permission ♟️
“Y/N,” his voice was soft, but there was a dangerous, threatening tone behind it. "Did you just meet someone... rude last night?"
- You opened your mouth to explain, to laugh at him, but William's next words, short in a smooth voice but sharp as a velvet knife, made your breath stop. His smile remained gentle... too gentle. A smile that usually means someone will be ‘removed from the equation.’
- Just as his mind began to devise the most perfect scenario to eliminate the "culprit" without a trace, his nose caught the distinctive aroma of linseed oil. He brushed his lips against the skin of your neck; you're shivering violently. This isn't a kiss yet—this is an investigation.
- (*linseed oil*), and his fingers felt the dry texture of the color pigment. The tension in his shoulders suddenly relaxed.
- William laughed softly; His laughter sounded relieved and at the same time laughing at himself for having lost control. "oh my... you really know how to test my patience with that art project, don't you?"
═✩══╡°˖ Sherlock Holmes
- Sherlock didn't waste time on pleasantries. When you passed each other near Baker Street, his eagle-sharp eyes immediately caught the red stain on your long neck. He stopped in his tracks, his eyes wide with a look of disbelief mixed with outright jealousy.
- "Oi, Y/N! What's with that on your neck?" he called a little too loudly, making a few passersby turn their heads. He approaches quickly, grabs both of your shoulders, and stares at the stain as if it were a clue to murder. "Who is the bastard who dares to do this? Tell me, I'll throw him into the Thames right now!"
- You could only stare at him confused before he leaned his face very close to your neck. He sniffed softly, then narrowed his eyes. He rubbed the stain with his thumb, seeing the red powder stuck to his skin. There was silence for a moment before Sherlock let out a ragged breath, rubbing his face dramatically.
- "Cadmium red paint. Really, Y/N. My heart almost stopped, and it turns out you were just careless with your painting tools. Next time, check your mirror!" he grumbled, even though the tips of his ears were red with embarrassment.
═✩══╡°˖ Albert James Moriarty
- Albert had always been able to hide his emotions behind an elegant mask of nobility, but the sight of your neck almost caused the mask to crack. When he welcomes you for tea, his emerald gaze immediately fixates on your neck. The friendly smile he wore turned into a cold and very possessive expression.
- He didn't say a word at first. He guides you to sit down, then stands directly behind your chair. His long, cool fingers deliberately brushed strands of your hair to the side, leaving the spot completely exposed.
- “My darling,” he whispered in a low voice right in your ear, sending shivers down your spine. "I didn't realize you had an acquaintance who dared to leave a mark of ownership on something that clearly belonged to me."
- When you gasped and hurriedly felt your neck, Albert's fingers rubbed the stain first. The coldness in his eyes immediately melted when the red color ran off his fingers. Albert chuckled softly, uhis jealousy evaporated and was replaced by amusement. He kissed lightly at the paint stains on your neck.
"In the future, let me help you clean up the remaining paint, hm?"
═✩══╡°˖ Fred porlock
- Fred is always silent, but his gaze never leaves you. When you approached him, he stared at you in a casual manner before his eyebrows dropped to your neck. In an instant, his eyes widened completely.
- His thin body stiffened. He took a half step back, staring at the red stain with a mixture of shock, hurt, and seething anger. He lowered his face, hiding his expression behind the shadows, while his hands were tightly clenched at his sides.
- "Y/N..." his voice sounded a little shaky and hoarse, "I have no right to control your personal life, but... at least close the sign in public places. It's not professional."
- He is ready to leave immediately and uses all his abilities to hunt down anyone who touches you. However, seeing such a serious reaction, you finally realized what he meant and immediately rubbed your neck with a handkerchief, revealing that the stain was just dried red paint.
- Fred blinked a few times, looking at your handkerchief and your now clean (though slightly red from rubbing) neck. His face suddenly turned red up to his ears. Without saying a word, he pulled his scarf high to hide his extremely embarrassed face, refusing to look at you for the rest of the day.
