Cornwall’s Random Card of the Day #45: Kraken’s Eye
Kraken’s Eye is an underwhelming artifact from Darksteel, and more notably, a whole buncha core sets.
So, if you’re a magic player, you can look at this and see how it sucks. 1 life per spell cast is pretty insignificant for a whole card. I mean you have to REALLY stall things out for this to add up to something worthwhile. And that’s assuming you’re playing mono-blue. Sure, maybe if you AND your opponent played mono-blue, but if that’s the case you might as well just quit the game anyhow. Okay, seriously though it’s quite unlikely to happen. If it made the opponent LOSE life each time you cast a blue spell, well, that might be a bit more worthwhile.
So if it’s so bad then why reprint it in five core sets? Cause new players need to learn about the bad cards. New players overestimate life gain, as I think I’ve mentioned before, so the theory goes that if you give them crappy life gain cards to play with, they’ll eventually learn that they’re bad and to avoid them. I dunno how that one actually works out, but they’ve printed them in a bunch so I guess they must’ve thought it was doing work for a long time.
