#Education
People are asking me why I decided to run. I will give the full story this Thursday 11AM at the official campaign announcement at Pearl River County Courthouse. But as a teaser, here is what I am calling,
Pillar 1-Education.
September 2014. My daughter expressed a sincere interest in attending the Mississippi Math and Science School, and we began that process. She really committed herself to the application process and she made the cut on February 20, 2015. While the hopefuls were in their final interviews, Dr. McConnell, Executive director at MSMS, informed the parents of the cuts to the school's funding. I believe they were only going to be able to admit 240 or so kids due to funding cuts. So the incoming freshmen hopefuls, some of our states best and brightest, were not going to make the cut. Luckily, my daughter did.
I reached out to every state representative I knew to attempt to get some help for the school with no success. Then I paid close attention to how the legislature seemed to derail the Initiative 42. As I watched that unfold it piqued my interest even more.
This Summer my daughter and I had many lengthy discussions about why the legislature would not want to invest in our best and brightest students. Sadly I really could not provide her with an answer. So I saw the opportunity arise to step up and go to Jackson to serve our district and fight for education, I knew the time was right.
I am a product of the Mississippi educational System. A 1992 Graduate of Oak Grove High school in Lamar County. I received my BSBA from the University of Southern Mississippi (Economics/International Business).
My mother Margie Farlow did her Undergraduate work at Mississippi State and received her Masters in Education at the University of Mississippi. She taught in the public school system for 25 years and retired from Lamar county schools 2014.
My father, Dan R. Wise, attended high school in Coahoma County and graduated in 1967. He received his BA in Political science at Mississippi State University in 1971 and his Juris Doctorate in Law at the University of Mississippi in 1974.
My sister Juliana Kyzar graduated in Lamar County, did her undergraduate work at Mississippi College, received a degree in biology and education and taught in the Mississippi public school system for 2 years. She then completed her Masters and currently serves as a science instructor and educational tutor in Tennessee.
My brother Wilson Wise also graduated in Lamar County, did his undergraduate work at Mississippi College, received his Masters degree and taught in the Mississippi public school system for 5 years including 3 years as the Poplarville band director 2007-2010. He then completed his Doctorate at the University of Oklahoma and currently serves as a director of the United States Air Force Band of Mid America.
I am proud of the education I received right here in Mississippi!
Education matters to everyone in our district. We are all connected by this priority: as parents wanting the best for our children, as citizens wanting the best for and from our neighbors, and as business owners, wanting an educated workforce that can help us prosper. This is both a moral and financial obligation.
When our schools suffer, we all suffer. We must stop the partisan assaults on education funding and join together to make education the top priority in our state. Our future is at stake. We can only rise out of 50th place if we make the decision to rise together. #education #district106 #futurefocused
