On the way down the Island yesterday to catch our ferry, we thought we’d treat ourselves to an old (as in hadn’t tried it in over 15 years) favourite, @mrmikesduncan. We looked forward to a classic Western Canadian treat! However, in the chain’s rebrand, some things that made Mr. Mike’s a unique institution seem to have been lost. I ordered the steak sandwich, which used to be called the Mike Burger - not to be confused with the actual hamburger now on their menu under that name - with fries and a pint of their okay, but not great, Antler Ale. I had to order an extra half of garlic bread because it’s only an open-faced sandwich now. She got the sirloin and panko shrimp. We both ordered our steaks medium, but it’s not what we received. Her thick steak was so rare, it turned her potatoes pink! Mine was just as full-on rare, despite being a thinner cut. I downed mine despite not getting what I asked for because I was famished and we had little time to mess around in order to make our sailing! But hers was so undercooked, it was inedible. She sent it back and the server apologized and promised it would be fixed. Okay, fine. But when it came back four or five minutes later - not enough time to cook it to medium in my books - it was on the same rare juice-coated plate, with the same pink garlic mashed potatoes, and was still more or less rare and again not what she asked for. Though hers was at least no longer blue, it was definitely not medium. Medium should be pink and have almost clear juices, not the reddish and still slightly ‘bleeding’ re-grill she ultimately got. Oh, and my steak sandwich still had the gristle all along the edge which was not trimmed before the grill - the very essence of what makes it a ‘sandwich’! Anyway, we finished and paid, and afterwards I noticed that there was nothing knocked off the bill for the obvious eff-up! Is it unreasonable to ask that some gesture be offered in this situation? The bill for our meh meal was high enough to add insult to injury. I realize we went on a holiday Monday, but don’t think it’s too much to ask to get what you order at any time, and have it properly rectified if you don’t.
