❛ you okay? caught you staring off into space again. ❜
Her head turned towards her friend before her eyes tore themselves off the door. As if looking away for even the shortest moment would make her miss a crucial detail. After the previous night, she has contemplated staying at home, calling in sick, or even just not opening the bar at all for a bit. Doubts of whether she made the right call by going to work regardless, swarmed her mind.
What if her ex-lover would show her face freely at her workplace now that they’ve ‘talked’? What if Nora was waiting right behind that door? Perhaps Eden missed her entering, and she was already inside, watching her from across the room?
Despite years of active practice and methods to make herself appear as calm as possible, the shock of seeing not just any member of her previous gang, but the leader, shook her even more than she ever expected. Her heart was racing and a thin layer of cold sweat veiled itself on the back of her neck. And even then, she simply offered Kaya a small, tight-lipped smile before she shook her head.
She told herself she would tell her, and she intended to keep that promise. But not when they were both at work, surrounded by customers who were lining up along the counter. Maybe later, when most of their regulars started to head home and the two of them busied themselves with their cleaning duties. Maybe then she could tell her.
“Was I?” her smile spread wider and blended with a chuckle while she grabbed two glasses and two bottles of beer for her current order.
“Damn, I’m sorry. I think I’m a little out of it today.” Eden’s tone was lighthearted as she shook her head, playing her reaction off as a clumsy mistake.
