Received a new company car – a fully electric one. And so my gas-guzzling days are over once and for all.

The employer even equipped my garage with a 3-phase, 22 kW home charger. The fanciest one you can install in Belgium. The technology was developed by Smappee in Kortrijk, a few kilometers from my house.

Their “smart” charging stations dispose of load balancing, solar forecasting etc.

To give a quick idea, “intelligent” stations preferably charge your car with excess electricity generated by your solar panels that would otherwise be fed into the grid. Or they charge at night when the grid is more “relaxed” and electricity tariffs are the lowest, even though you connected the car earlier, during peak hours.

Load balancing means that charging your car never jeopardises the electricity needs of your home. Charging slows down or is delayed when your washing machine gets going, when you cook with an induction plate etc.

I could also tell you that the founder-CEO of Smappee is my cousin but you wouldn’t believe me. (He is. Does that make me a relation of the Belgian Elon Musk?)

The overall good news is that, in September 2024, for the first time, more electric cars were sold in Belgium than cars with a polluting combustion engine.

I was given the choice between various models; the shortlist contained a Tesla car. Although I don’t doubt the high quality of Tesla EVs, I didn’t consider driving around in a creation of the obnoxious muskrat for even half a second.

Personal behavior does matter! Maybe the oligarchs will understand that some day…

Detention lMax&Kovul

Kovu looked out his window and watched the sun slowly start making its way under. He figured it had to be around 5ish in the muggle world, which meant that whoever had detention was probably to report right now. Although Kovu had nothing to serve anymore, thanks to the lovely Aurora Waters, he was incredibly bored with his time. He had finished all his homework, including the one he had missed forever ago, and sketched up a couple of new tattoos he was going to get at some point of time. He also smoked his first cigarette again since Merlin knows when. So really it didn’t bother him, nor really shock him, when he started to make his way towards the detention center. He supposed he just wanted something to do that would entertain him long enough for dinner and then he could just sleep the night away. All he knew was that he didn’t want to think. Gaston was right about thinking..it was a dangerous past time. He walked down the corridor that lead to tonight’s detention center. It wasn’t long before he entered the door way, the professor on duty looking up at him for a second. Of course it would be no shock that Kovu were here, so he didn’t bother to question the boy. He sat himself down by a random stranger. It wasn’t until Kovu looked over to his side that he noticed this was no stranger, but in fact Max. Kovu thought a moment about why the heck Max was in detention and before Kovu even come up with answer the professor stood up to speak, “I shall return in twenty minutes. Any movements or noises shall result in another week added to your sentence ” And with that he was out of the door. Kovu watched him walk out before turning to max. “What the heck are you doing in here?” He asked softly.
