Stella had anticipated Talia making her way up to the recovery room eventually. She knew that there was only so long Max could keep her at bay, after all. It sucked that she was mostly distracted from bonding with Galaxy by her mental preparation for the older canineâs inevitable appearance, but she remained calm. Once the riot act had been read and Max had removed her, she could relax and spend the rest of her time in the hospital properly bonding with her daughter.
It happened sooner than she expected, though. It had only been a few minutes since Stella finally calmed down from her happy-crying (after almost an hour), and both the twins were just happily chatting and planning while Galaxy looked between them like she was following the conversation, occasionally butting in with a babble of her own. Nurses were filtering in and out periodically, checking on both Stella and Galaxy.
So when the door opened for the⌠sixth? Seventh time? Regardless, they were both expecting another nurse, or Dr North coming to give Stella the talk about her after-effects of birth. Instead, their fur immediately bristled as the woman they despised with every cell of their being swanned into the room like she owned the place.
âThere you both are! I knew you were somewhere around here.â Her eyes lit up as she saw the bundle in Stellaâs arms, and she gasped eagerly, immediately making a beeline for the bed with her arms out.
Jayceâs lip curled back, and he moved to intercept, but was immediately thrown off by Stella thrusting Galaxy into his arms, climbing out of the bed and moving to corral Talia back towards the door. âGet out.â
âWh--?â Talia reeled back, startled, before defaulting to her wheedling tone. âSweetie, you need to rest! You just get back into bed and let me meet my grandbaby--â
âGet out.â Unsteady on her feet as she was, Stella didnât back down, arms out to prevent her from dodging around her and continuing to force her back towards the door. Her short answers left no room for argument, and yet she knew this vile woman was still going to make as many as she could.
âS-Stella, donât be so difficult! Donât you know every baby needs their grandma?â Sure enough⌠âCome on, just let me meet her! She needs me! Let me--â
âI. Said. Get. Out.â Reaching around her, Stella pushed the door open and promptly forced her out of the room back into the hall. Immediately she shut the door and leaned back against it, blocking her from getting back in.
Just as she expected, Talia was looking at her with that look - that hurt, wounded, poor-me look. âAre you seriously going to prevent me from meeting my grandbaby? You canât hold these silly grudges forever, sweetie, you have to--â
âDonât you fucking âsweetieâ me!â It came out so viciously that Talia actually took a step back. âYou could have killed me! You could have killed my daughter! Do you seriously think Iâm going to let you anywhere near her after what you did?!â
She had the audacity to laugh. âOh, come on, Stella, that was an accident! And it was just a little nick!â
âDoes this look like a âlittle nickâ to you?!â Stella tilted her head up, pointing at the stitching along her throat. âIf you hit my vital vessels, both of us would probably be dead! I could have you put away for aggravated assault, if not attempted murder!â
âAnd whoâs going to believe you?â Yep - there it was. Talia was stood straight now, sneering down her nose at Stella to try and make her feel inferior and unimportant. âYouâre just a silly little girl, after all - no oneâs going to listen to you. And I could have your brat brother put away for assault - he attacked me, after all.â
âHe defended me.â And the cameras would prove that. That Talia had attacked Stella, a pregnant woman, and Jayce had attacked Talia to defend Stella and Galaxy. They had all the evidence they needed to put her away if they wanted to. The less she knew about that, though, the better. âBut Iâm willing to let this slide if you get the fuck out of our lives and never bother us again.â
âDonât be ridiculous! Listen now, Stella, tomorrow Iâm going to contact the necessary people and make arrangements, and youâre going to sign your parental rights over to me.â Ugh, she had that âyou silly ignorant little childâ pitying look on her face that the twins hated so much. âYou know that my grandbabyâs only going to suffer if she stays with you. Besides, youâve never even raised a baby before - you have no idea what youâre doing. Iâve raised four of you, so I have much more experience.â
âOK, clearly you need your hearing checked. I told you not even a minute ago that youâre not allowed around her.â Stellaâs fur was bristling furiously, tail completely rigid behind her. âSheâs not âyourâ anything, so stop with the âmy grandbabyâ crap. Youâre only her grandmother by blood - you gave up your right to actually be a grandmother by being a shitty mother. Look at how all your kids turned out - Codyâs a violent sociopath, Max is almost completely socially inept, and Jayce and I still have nightmares about everything youâve done to us. Yeah, well done, you raised a bunch of fuckups. Real bang-up job you did there.â
Talia had that stern disappointed mother look on her face now, crossing her arms in a self-entitled manner. Normally that expression had both twins wilting and stammering out apologies, but Stella stood firm. Well, as firm as she could with how wrecked she was from the birth - she was still a little unsteady on her feet - but she had to stand tall. She had her own child to protect now.
âYouâre such a disrespectful child.â Talia was still sneering down her nose. âYour father will be hearing about this.â
âNot my problem.â Lane wasnât going to care as long as they were safe and healthy.
The older canine snorted. âMy friends wonât be happy.â
âIrrelevant.â Because they were. It wasnât their business.
âWell, the community at home w--â
âI donât care if you have the cops, the entirety of G.U.N, and the motherfucking President of the United Federation on your side--â Stellaâs voice was rising a little in her anger. â--you are not coming anywhere near my daughter!!â
It was at this point a nurse finally took notice of the confrontation, and she approached, looking concerned. âMiss Hope, what are you doing out of bed? Is everything alright?â
âYeah, this bitch is on my visitor blacklist.â Stella didnât break eye contact with Talia as she spoke. âGet her out of here.â
âWhat?! Of course Iâm not!â Talia laughed at the absurdity. âIâm her mother, thereâs no way sheâd--â
âExcept she has. Iâve seen it myself.â Ah, there was Max, coming up behind Talia and forcefully taking her arm. âCâmon, the doctorâs given you the all-clear. We need to go.â
âNo! Iâm not leaving until Iâve met my gr--â
âToo bad. You need to go home. They donât want you here, and for good reason.â Without giving Talia room to argue, Max began directing her towards the wardâs exit. âCâmon, you donât wanna make a scene, do you?â
Talia began protesting indignantly, prompting the nurse to follow behind to ensure nothing happened, while simultaneously radioing for security. Stella didnât move from the door until Talia was out of the ward and out of earshot. Once she was certain it was safe, she turned around and opened the door again, slipping back into her room. Jayce was sitting in the visitor chair, Galaxy resting on his knees as he played with her. He looked up as Stella reappeared, brow creased in worry. âEverything alright?â
âYep. Itâs been sorted.â Stella climbed back into bed, flopping against her pillows. âCan you text Max and remind him to get that key off her? I donât wanna have to change our locks...â
âYeah, no problem.â Jayce lifted Galaxy and stood up, returning her to her motherâs arms. âHere. She was really good while you were out there.â
âOh, yeah?â Stella grinned, tickling Galaxyâs tummy. âWere you a good girl for Uncle Jayce?â
Galaxy burst into a giggle fit at the contact, wiggling and kicking playfully. Once more, Stella felt her heart swell with love. Fuck what Talia said, she knew she was doing something right if she could make her daughter laugh and smile. And it didnât matter how much she preached about Stellaâs experience in rearing children - she didnât need âexperienceâ in order to properly love and cherish her child. Something that Talia had never done for them.
Fuck her. Stella and Galaxy didnât need her. Theyâd be just fine without her. Everything was going to be OK.

A knock at the door drew the twinsâ attention away from their video game. Immediately, Jayce went for his phone, loading up the app connected to the doorbell camera. Sure enough, just like sheâd promised, there stood Talia, equipped with a suitcase and waiting impatiently for them to answer.
Yeah, nope. Without even hesitating, Jayce tapped out of the app and fired off a text to campus security, then silenced his phone. Stella followed suit. Jayce then stood up and grabbed his and his sisterâs headphones from the TV stand.
Once they were on, they returned to their game, blissfully unaware of their mother banging at the door demanding to be let in. Hopefully they got the message across loud and clear.
Yep... just as predicted, Taliaâs newfound quest was far from over. Sheâd left so many voicemails that the twinsâ inboxes were completely full, and the texts sheâd sent well surpassed the triple-digit range. It varied from sucking up to them to starting her âpoor little martyr meâ act to screaming expletives at them, but the general message was pretty much the same - she planned on visiting every weekend until Galaxy was born, and then staying a few weeks afterwards to help with the baby.
Well, not on their watch. Jayce had made good on his promise, and returned to the apartment after a busy day out with a wireless security system they could hook up to their laptops, as well as a doorbell camera that could connect to their phones. Talia was not going to have her way.
âHyperemesis gravidarum.â Dr North handed over the pamphlet. âItâs not often seen in pregnancies, so I didnât even consider it at first, but you match the symptoms. Your nausea and vomiting hasnât subsided, youâre becoming dehydrated, and youâve been fainting. Iâm concerned about your weight as well, since you arenât able to keep anything down. Do you have a known family history of HG?â
âNot that either of us know of.â Jayce shrugged. âOur mother never mentioned anything about her having severe vomiting or anything when she was pregnant with us or our brothers, but we never asked. And to be honest, we donât want to ask, because weâd rather not have her knowing about Galaxy. Personal reasons.â
âNo, I understand. Thereâs a reason you have her on your hospital blacklist, after all - you donât have to explain anything that you donât want to.â Taking some notes, the feline doctor returned his attention to Stella. âIâm going to prescribe some anti-emetics - these should work better than the over-the-counter medications. If these arenât enough to combat the vomiting, contact me again and Iâll administer some IV fluids.â
âAlright.â Stella took a sip of the water she had on hand. âIs this gonna have any kind of negative effect on Galaxy?â
âWell, there is an increased risk of your daughter being born prematurely, and underweight. Luckily, youâve passed twenty-five weeks, so at least sheâll be viable if she is premature. My main concern is making sure that you maintain a healthy weight, and that we get the vomiting under control.â Standing up, Dr North picked up his briefcase, preparing to leave. âIâll have one of the nurses come by later with the prescription. Until then, make sure that you just eat whatever you can keep down, and make sure to avoid too much physical exertion. Shower sitting down, attend your classes via video call, things like that. And of course, make sure to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.â
Stella tilted her head quizzically, with an amused smile. âIs this you basically putting me on bed rest now?â
âMore or less. At least until we have your sickness properly managed.â The feline shook the younger twinâs hand. âI know youâre not happy about it, Stella, but--â
âHey, look, weâre looking out for Galaxyâs best interests, right?â Stella shrugged. âAt the end of the day, she comes first. Iâll do whatever it takes to make sure sheâs born healthy, even if it means Iâm not allowed to move for the rest of the pregnancy.â She looked up at her brother. âJayce, youâll help, won't you?â
âYeah, of course. Iâll call Max and see if he can help out on the days I canât be there, too.â Jayce squeezed her shoulder, nodding gratefully at the feline. âThanks again, Dr North.â
âItâs no problem at all.â He nodded back with a smile. âYou two deserve some happiness and comfort in your life. Helping you with your medical troubles is the least I can do. Contact me if anything else comes up, alright?â
âAlright. Thanks. Oop--â Stella looked down at her abdomen. There was movement. And she could see it. Smiling softly, she looked back up. âGalaxy says thanks, too.â
Welp... it was go time. The new academic year had begun at Skyline University. Jayce and Stella were now entering their junior year, and honestly, they couldnât help feeling a little worried. Sure, security still had their backs if anything went wrong, but now that Kyron was gone, they didnât feel as safe anymore...
Sure, Axel was still stuck in his wheelchair. But last time theyâd checked, his lackeys were still eager to do his bidding. And theyâd heard through the grapevine that the wolf was undergoing some serious physio to begin walking again - and was actually making progress, as well. Not that they werenât glad for him, but they were worried about what it might mean for them.
Would he come after them again? He totally would, wouldnât he? And with vengeance. Fuck, they hoped they were graduated by then...
The twins had been worrying about all this, and a little more, as they made their way to their first class of the year. Already they were watching as the crowds passed them, quick to identify who had left and who was beginning freshers week. The colder autumn air was already beginning to set in, so both of them had broken out their hoodies. And Galaxy was still small enough that Stellaâs hoodie was doing a good job of hiding her for now...
She had just enough time to wonder when sheâd have to go on the hunt for maternity clothes - and then it happened.
âSo youâre still here, huh?â
Both twins immediately froze in their tracks as Axel, Kyler and Eli appeared in front of them. Just like that, the adrenaline was flowing - both of them tense and ready to start running if the situation called for it. Jayce glared between the trio of tormentors, a frustrated sigh escaping. âWhat do you want? We have just as much of a right to be here as you assholes.â
âNo you donât.â Even wheelchair bound, Axel still seemed to think he was hot shit - he still had a fearsome reputation backing him, after all. âWe were expecting you freaks to have fucked off during the summer, but I guess youâre too stubborn for your own good, huh?â
âLook, we donât exactly feel like dealing with your crap this year. We kind of have other things on our plate.â Taking his sisterâs arm, Jayce moved to walk around them. âIf you donât mind, we have classes to be at, so--â
âGrab âem.â Before either twin knew what was happening, Kyler had thrown Jayce to the ground, and Eli had Stellaâs arms pinned behind her back. Jayce immediately scrambled to get up, but Kyler punched him in the face, knocking him back down. Stella struggled viciously in Eliâs grip, but he held her firm, managing to keep her in place. Already a small crowd was beginning to gather, with the freshmen wondering what on Mobius was going on.
Axel wheeled up to Stella, already flexing his fingers in preparation. âYou weirdos just donât get it, do you? As long as weâre here, weâre gonna do whatever it takes to get you the hell off our campus. And if that means beating you to death again, then thatâs what were gonna fucking do.â
âLeave her alone!â Jayce struggled. âSheâs pregnant!â
At that, the entire area filled with silence. The entire audience looked a mix of shocked, all eyes immediately flashing over to Stellaâs abdomen for confirmation. Without hesitating, Axel yanked her hoodie up, revealing the tiny bump that was Galaxy. Shock became horror, as the onlookers began judging the situation. Even Kyler and Eli seemed uncomfortable, looking reluctant to continue their attack.
Axel, however... his muzzle broke into a dark, toothy grin. And, as he drew his fist back, he uttered a single word, proving that he hadnât changed a bit.
âGood.â
And he thrust his fist forward--
--only for it to meet the sole of Stellaâs sneaker.
âWh--â He pulled back again, but Stella quickly braced her foot against the space between his legs, pushing the wheelchair away and forcing it to roll back away from her. In the same split second, she threw her head back, hitting Eli square in the face, forcing him to release her. As he reeled backward, clutching his bloody nose, she spun on her toes and threw her own fist into his sternum, knocking the wind out of him. Kyler watched on in shock, giving Jayce the opportunity he needed to sweep his legs and leap back up to his feet, cupping his own nose gingerly.
As soon as the twins were free, some of the freshmen broke away from the crowd, sprinting over to the pairâs side. âAre you two OK?!â âWhat the hell is their problem?!â âDid they seriously just attack a pregnant girl?!â âIs this what Skylineâs whole student body is like?!â âI got the whole thing on my phone!â Jayce and Stella immediately took note of the last remark, eyes already roving the crowd for the freshman who said that - evidence.
âYou twerps donât get it! They deserve it!â And there was Axel already on the defence, ready to deliver the rumours. âThese freaks are--!â
âAxel, dude, stop.â Kyler was grabbing the wheelchair handles, already preparing to book it. âYou canât seriously think itâs OK to beat up a pregnant chick - I mean, they wouldnât attack you.â
âYeah, itâs not worth it, man.â Eli was beginning to make his way off too. âLetâs bail before they actually decide to press charges or something.â
âPfft! They canât!â Even as he was being wheeled off, Axel was talking big game. âYou know my dadâll have us out of the clink and off scot free! We can do whatever we want!â
âOh, yeah?â Stella was angrier than sheâd ever been in a long time, yelling after him as they vanished down a side street. âHave fun explaining to Daddy dearest why you thought it was OK to attack a pregnant woman! Even heâs not gonna defend that!â
And then the trio was gone, leaving the twins panting heavily and surrounded by concerned freshmen, offering them water bottles, painkillers, and words of comfort. All of them seemed to be particularly worried about Stella - no one touched her, but they made a specific point of asking if she and her baby were alright. She had to think about that answer for a while, as did Jayce.
Neither of them had been anticipating themselves to fight back. Theyâd never done it before, after all. But before... before, it was just them. Just the two of them, struggling through everyday life, just putting up with every punch, kick, and hateful word sent their way. But it wasnât just them anymore. No... now, they had to worry about the tiny life growing inside Stella. The tiny life that she could feel squirming away, like she knew something was going on. In that moment... all both twins had felt was just an overwhelming urge to protect.
They didnât care what happened to them. Axel and his cronies could destroy their reputations, for all they cared. They could do or say whatever they liked - they could deal with it. Theyâd dealt with it their whole lives, after all.
But one thing was for certain. If Axel - no, not just Axel... if anyone even thought of hurting a single hair on Galaxyâs head...

As soon as the twins had finished eating, they immediately went out on a run, hoping to work up a fresh appetite for the cake. Odds were, theyâd be too excited by the result to actually eat it, but they were going to do their best. Maybe theyâd keep most of it back to hand out to their friends as a surprise, though that was dependant on whether or not Stella could hold back from scarfing the whole thing down. Her appetite kept fluctuating every day...
When they made it back to the apartment, they were doing everything they could to not start bouncing off the walls in excitement. The cake was still where theyâd left it on the counter.
âAlright...â Locking the door, Jayce grinned at Stella. âYou wanna do the honours, sis?â
âYou know it, bro.â Smiling back, Stella headed over to the counter, while Jayce took out his phone to start recording. This was a milestone in their lives that needed saving. Grabbing a couple of plates and a cake knife, Stella set them on the counter next to the cake itself, looking over her shoulder as Jayce held the phone up in preparation. âReady whenever!â
Grinning, Jayce started the video. âAlright, guys, here we go! Gender reveal time!â
Stella couldnât help giggling eagerly, gripping her wrist to keep herself accidentally scraping the icing off the cake. âIâm freaking out, I donât know why...â
âHurry up! I wanna see!â
âAlright, alright, alright...â Shakily, she held the cake knife up in preparation. âOh, Chaos, I canât believe this is actually happening...â
Before she could give herself time to think about it, she plunged the knife into the cake, releasing a breath she didnât even realise she was holding. After a few seconds, she withdrew it, inspecting the knife for any hints. â... wow, thereâs no crumbs on this thing. They could give us some tips on not getting crumbs everywhere when we make a cake...â
âAlright, moment of truth! Letâs see the result!â
âOK, OK, OK--â Once more without thinking, Stella lined up the knife and made the second cut. One hand moved to clutch her chest. âChaos, my heart is pounding...â
âMine is too, donât even worry!â
âOK, alright, here we go...â Taking another deep breath, Stella pulled the knife back again, this time sliding it under the slice sheâd cut, and moving one hand to the top to begin pulling it free. Before she did, she looked back at Jayce. âOn three?â
âYeah, alright letâs do it.â Jayce walked over, holding his phone at the perfect angle. âOne...â
âTwo...â
âThree!â And Stella promptly lifted the slice, plopping it on the empty plate in one smooth motion.
And then they both screamed.
âNo way!! No WAY!! AWESOME!!â It was all Jayce could do to keep the video in focus, unable to hold back his excitement. âThis is the best!!â
âI am LOVING LIFE!!â Stella dropped the knife on the counter, bouncing up and down in joy. âBest! Day! EVER!!â
Of course, no matter the outcome, theyâd still be reacting like this. But they had their answer now, and they couldnât contain themselves any more. They flung their arms around each other, squealing and giggling uncontrollably, still bouncing on their toes in their excitement. The angle Jayce was at game him the perfect view of the cake, and he pointed the phone at it, capturing a perfectly clear image of the result.
Just another slow morning at the hospital... Max groaned sleepily as he leaned back on the sofa, not wanting to move. He hadnât gotten a wink of sleep since the twins had been attacked - heâd spent too much time stressing about their lives, wondering if theyâd ever wake up, and being alert in the event that someone decided to finish what Axel started.Â
Speaking of Axel, Max finally had word on the wolf - nothing was ever released on the news, but heâd overheard two of Axelâs pals muttering to each other. The psychopathic wolf was now suffering from multiple axial burst fractures in his spine, most of which had borderline mutilated his spinal cord, completely paralysing him from the waist down.
Good. At least he wouldnât be able to pursue the twins anymore - theyâd easily be able to outrun him. Kyler and Eli were another story, but hopefully now that Axel was incapacitated, theyâd have less drive to continue their torment...
Maxâs ears perked as he heard the door open, sitting upright to find two nurses coming in - Evelyn and Faith. Evelyn was a grumpy old ewe who didnât seem to tolerate anyoneâs crap, and had been nothing but pessimistic about the twinsâ situation. Faith was the canary that the older brother had become friendly with - a senior medical student.
âHi, Max!â Faith chirped, clearly happy as ever to see him. âWeâre just here to check on the twinsâ vitals again. Afterwards, weâll take them down for an x-ray to check how their bones are healing, and a CT scan to check on their bad lungs. Sound good?â
âWork away!â Max stood up, stretching. âI hope their lungs will have healed soon, theyâd hate to be cooped up in here much longer when they wake up...â
âIf they wake up.â Evelyn frowned at him. âI know you want them to wake up as much as we do, but donât get your hopes up. Iâve seen coma patients in better condition than them who never came out of it. These two could very well be the same.â
âGee, thanks for the optimism, Evelyn...â Faith rolled her eyes, already stood by Stellaâs bed. âJust go check on Jayce and quit being a downer?â
Evelyn went, shaking her head as she checked over the older twin. âHonestly, even if they do wake up, theyâre going to have suffered some severe brain damage. Theyâll never be able to walk ever again, theyâll likely never be able to talk, youâll have to be with them every minute of every day--â
âEvelyn, seriously?â Max glared at her, livid. âYour job is to look after the patients in your care, not just write them off before theyâve even had a chance.â
âYeah, seriously! What crawled up your rear end and died?!â Faith was glaring too. âDr North said that both Jayce and Stella were progressing wonderfully after last nightâs stimuli tests!â
âThat bloody Dr North...â Evelyn shook her head again. âI donât know why heâs keeping up the pretence - I think itâs just cruel. Heâs only been in practice for 3 years - Iâve been nursing for over 19, and I can tell you right now itâs obvious that these two are never going to recover.â
Max was furious. Heâd already hated Evelyn before, but this? This was unforgivable. She reminded him of their mother, how she would just write them off without even giving them a chance. But before he could retort... he heard something.
A shift from Stellaâs bed.
Immediately, amber eyes snapped in that direction to locate his little sister.
And... there she was. Blearily opening her eyes, aiming her own death glare at Evelyn, shakily raising a middle finger, and mumbling behind the tube in her mouth. It sounded like she was trying to say âgo to hellâ.
Not that it mattered. She was awake.
And then, at the same time, her twin stirred. Jayceâs head turned to the side, eyes weakly cracking open and searching the room, with a tired mumble of his own behind his tube.
They were awake. THEY WERE AWAKE.
âJ-Jayce... S-Stella...â Max immediately started trembling, tears forming in his eyes. He couldnât believe it - after two long, stressful weeks, they were finally awake... âO-oh Chaos... y-youâre actually a-awake...â
âMax, donât get excited,â Evelyn warned. âThis is likely just a reflex to what we were saying--â
It was Jayceâs turn to glare and mumble - something like âIâm awake, shut upâ. It was only then he seemed to realise there was a tube in his mouth, and he weakly raised a hand to try and remove it. Stella followed the motion, whimpering in confusion.
âWhoa-- guys, no no no - keep âem in...â Max quickly gestured for both twins to stop, and after a few seconds, their hands flopped back at their sides again. Then Max looked over his shoulder at Evelyn. âWell, donât just stand there! Go get Dr North! Heâll wanna know about this!â
âU-umm-- r-right! Of course!â Taken aback by how lucid the twins seemed to be, Evelyn immediately charged from the room.
âIâd better go as well,â Faith remarked. âI still need to put in the order for those x-rays and CT scans.â And with that, she departed as well, leaving the trio alone in the room once more.
Max looked back at his little brother and sister once more, his tears spilling over from the sheer joy and relief he felt. Jayce noticed first, and, since he couldnât really talk at the moment, weakly raised both hands to sign, What are you doing here, Max? Where are we?
âY-you donât remember?â Max moved to squeeze his brotherâs hand. âAxel attacked you guys - beat you half to death. Youâve been in a coma in the hospital for the last two weeks...â
Both twinsâ eyes widened, and they exchanged a look. Two weeks!? So theyâd missed their birthday?! It was only then they noticed the few gifts around the room - cards, flowers, and the two teddies that Max had bought them. They immediately reached for them, slowly pulling them into reach and hugging them close. They remembered the attack, alright - and they didnât want to remember...
It was Stellaâs turn to sign. Do our friends know? Have they been to visit us?
âYep.â Max nodded, smiling. âIâm gonna start contacting them in a minute, let them all know that youâre awake, OK? But first, the doctorâs gonna come check on you, then youâre gonna get an x-ray to check on all your broken bones and a CT scan to see how your lungs are healing. Your ribs got broken, and you each suffered a punctured lung as a result, but theyâve been healing really well...â
Both Jayce and Stella blearily nodded, just weakly hugging the plush toys and sighing contentedly at the soft touch. All Max could really do was just stand where he was and quietly sob with relief, only looking up again as Dr North came in.
They were awake. They were responsive, and amazingly lucid. And still possessing some level of snark, if their reactions to Evelynâs pessimism said anything.
âYo, Axel, you sure âbout this? What if security busts you?â
âThey wonât! I know how to sneak around! And getting in and out of that hospital undetected should be freakinâ easy.â Axel smirked evilly, playing with the blade in his hands. âAll I gotta do is take âem off all their machines, sever a couple arteries, and theyâll be done. Just another pair of unworthy trash heaps eradicated from campus.â
âYeah, cool, but--â Eli was looking a little uneasy. âYou know whatâll happen if you get busted, man... maybe itâs better if we just let âem recover and drop out.â
âThey wonât. You know they wonât. Weâve pushed their limits so many times, and they still wouldnât take the hint. We gotta make sure that theyâre never coming back.â The wolf glared at them, folding up the knife and pocketing it. âIf you pussies wanna stay behind, go ahead, but Iâm gonna get those disgusting freaks off our campus once and for all.â
âAxel...â Even the usually stone-faced Kyler didnât seem down with it.
âFine. Stay here. Iâll handle this myself.â Axel stormed out of the house, grabbing his skateboard on the way, and took off in the direction of the hospital.
The sun was just beginning to vanish in the horizon, casting the university campus in a soft evening glow. The cold autumn air rustled through the trees, chilling the wolfâs fur, but he paid it no mind. All he could focus on was the memory of watching the news, seeing that report telling of two students found nearly dead in an alley on the north side of campus. Learning that those rats had survived, and were now comatose in hospital. Now all that mattered was making sure that they never woke up from their comas.
However, fate had another plan. As he skated into an alley that would prove an easy shortcut to the hospital, something suddenly tipped up the back of his skateboard. With a startled yelp, he stumbled off the board and fell to the ground, yelling in pain as he hit his elbow and knocked his funny bone.
âGhhh...â Clinging his arm, he struggled to sit up, looking to see what had caused his tumble. What met him was the sight of a Mobian maybe a few inches shorter than himself, clothed entirely in black, face obscured with a mask and goggles. Even their tail was covered up, completely masking the colour of their fur. Clutched in their gloved hands was a hefty sledgehammer.
âWhat the fuck, man? Whatâs your damage?â Axel shifted backwards, moving to stand. âYou donât just knock someone off their skateboard and--!â
But that was as far as he got. Without any warning, the figure suddenly swung the sledgehammer, the side connecting with the wolfâs shoulder. Another pained yell escaped from his throat as he was knocked onto his side, clinging to his shoulder in pain. Something had to have broken... âW-what the hell, dude?! W-what are you--?!â
Again, with no word, the figure lifted their foot and brought it down hard on Axelâs injured shoulder, forcing him onto his stomach. The foot then moved to between his shoulder blades, keeping him pinned to the floor. They then shifted, moving to haul the sledgehammer up above their head. Axel craned his neck to try and peer over his shoulder, panic finally beginning to rise in his system as he realised what the attacker had planned. âD-dude, no no no no no--!â
His words were promptly cut off by a loud, agonised, guttural scream tearing from his throat as the sledgehammer came down hard on his back, right in the centre. Pain like heâd never experienced before ripped through his system like a wildfire, until tears spilled from his eyes. He tried desperately to bear through it, only to let out another scream as the weapon came down a second time. Oh Chaos that hurt that hurt what the hell was this fucker doing to him?!
Seemingly satisfied, the figure removed their foot, stepping over the incapacitated wolf and turning to make their way out of the alley. Axel tried to turn over, tried to move to clamber to his feet, but the pain was too much. Even the slightest twitch got him to scream again. Gritting his teeth, he craned his neck as much as he could, glaring after the disappearing figure. âY-you bastard!! Just you wait until my dad finds out about this! Heâll have you arrested so fast you wonât even hear the sirens, and then youâll rot in prison where you belong, you utter fucking PSYCHOPATH!!â
Silence was all that met him. Grunting in agony, Axel shifted his hand under his torso, trying to remove his phone from his pocket.
He needed an ambulance...

30 MINUTES LATER
==========
Max walked into Room H-5 with shaking legs. He plunged his hands into his pockets to try to hide the fact that his hands were trembling. A yellow-feathered canary nurse was checking over Stellaâs vitals, doing the usual tests, etc. Hearing the older Hope brotherâs entrance, she looked up, smiling reassuringly at the canine.
âHi, Max!â she called cheerfully. âWhere did you get off to?â
âHad to stretch my legs,â Max replied casually. âGet some fresh air. Gets a bit stressful being in here for too long, yâknow?â
âI understand.â The nurse smiled and nodded. âWell, luckily, your siblings seem to be on the mend in terms of their physical injuries. All their broken bones seem to be healing normally, and their punctured lungs are also beginning to heal. Itâll probably take about six to eight weeks for the lungs to heal completely, but if youâd like, we could attempt surgery to speed up the process.â
âLeave that decision to them when they wake up.â Max looked between them. âBecause they will wake up. I know it.â
The nurse nodded again, already moving to leave the room. Sighing in relief, Max removed his hands from his pockets, raking trembling fingers through his hair. A few seconds later, he sat down on the sofa, once more looking between both Jayce and Stella.
â... hey... Iâm back, guys. Guess what...â The older canineâs chilled, casual façade finally broke, leaving him trembling and crying as it fully sank in just what heâd done. â... t-that bastardâs never gonna be able to hurt you again...â
