Dwarrow believe the highest aspiration is to know onesself completely and it's normal to choose to express a different gender when one's life changes. There is a common Delve performed as a coming-of-age trial where an individual digs a borehole seeking new mineral veins or adventure; they often re-declare gender when returning from that.
The Delve is a metaphoric and literal approach toward the core of the goddess they live inside (the world is god) meant to be meditative and self-exploratory, but changes can happen at any time. Different names are used inside and outside the Mountainhomes; when you return home or leave, you inform everybody what you want to be called right now, including pronouns, and Clan (because Dwarrow deliberately deemphasize blood ties in favor of community fluidity).
The six genders are mostly about offering more ways of self-expression! But there is absolutely no tie between sex and gender. I take a long time to drop even oblique references to it, but the romantic lead who is a Dwarrow would be a trans man by American human terms. Doesn't matter anyway; all Dwarrow grow beards! Babies are born mostly beard!
