New research has brought water bears back into the news. According to the study, it turns out that only a few catastrophic events could push these microscopic superheroes to extinction. Those are a supernova that swallows earth, an extreme blast of radiation that would fry the Earth and or a giant asteroid. Impact. Tardigrades, or water bears or moss pigs, are the heartiest lifeforms on Earth. Scientists have discovered their hundred-year-old dried out bodies and reanimated them in a drop of water. What's more is, they've survived the complete vacuum of space and harmful radiation. It's been recently discovered that a protein called Dsup (short for "damage suppressor") sticks to the organism's DNA which acts as a radiation shield.
