Big moment! For any of you that listened to our episode of Seeds and their People where we were in Greenville, MS with my partner Chris’s (and my) family - you’ll remember the sounds of my father in-law cracking open moringa pods from his own moringa tree. Well, while they looked a little immature, one has germinated! He fell in love with moringa during their Year of Return home-going trip to Ghana, and these were the first seeds he harvested from the first trees he started from seed. Very excited to grow trees descended from his plants at our farm here in Pennsylvania. We grow it from seed each year, and in one season it can get around 15’ tall in the high tunnel, and about 10’ outside. We dry the leaves for medicine, or use them fresh as a highly nutritious vegetable. Zoe and Amirah with some of the moringa harvest a couple days ago. We grow it from seed each year, and in one season it can get around 15’ tall in the high tunnel, and about 10’ outside. We dry the leaves for medicine, or use them fresh as a highly nutritious vegetable. My father in law has a couple second year trees in Mississippi making huge pods, which are eaten young, or saved for seed as he is doing. Up here, out of about 12 trees, we got one to flower this year, but moringa rarely flowers in the first year, let alone makes pods. Bernard Singleton of @nebedayefarms in South Carolina says you can dig up the roots and store them dry like tulip bulbs to replant next year, since they are sensitive to frost and won’t overwinter in the ground here. We will try that this week, now that the leaves are harvested and drying down, and the cold nights are here. Isto sim, eu chamo de "caldo verde"! Um caldo de ossos, com espinafre, moringa oleifera e ora-pro-nóbis . Para servir , acrescentei açafrão da terra , pimenta do reino e levedura de cerveja (nutricional). That's what I call "green broth"! A bone broth, with spinach, moringa oleifera and ora-pro-nóbis.
