Teenagers not liking or even hating their parents is not typical teen behavior. At the root of all anger is a child that is not getting something they they need in life. There is something missing in their world. Our jobs as parents is to discover a way though the masks of emotions and find a way to reconnect with them and provide our children with the attention and unconditional love they desire. The parents biggest misconception in doing this is thinking it can happen overnight or there is some magical potion to make that connection. Children takes years to build up this anger and resentment so it is going to take time to turn things around. In situations like this we are being taught by our children to have patience. That is just one of the lessons we are supposed to be learning when their emotions manifest into anger and hate. We can coach them or control them but we can’t do both. When our children see nothing but perfection they become self conscious about their own shortcomings and challenges which results in low self-esteem and a lack of confidence. My parents never cry or have issues so how can I even begin to think that the problem I have I should even bother them about. I should be stronger and figure it out. I don’t want them to think I am stupid, weak and I would hate for them to look down upon me. This is what we get when we never show our children our failures and display our true emotions. We bury and hide them because we are afraid they won’t be able to handle it. However, it is doing more harm then good because If they don’t see us as humans how can we expect them to come to us when they need help. In order for our children to grow we need to provide them with emotional nourishment they require to help them build self esteem and courage so that some day they can spread their wings and take on the world and experience it through their own eyes and not the filters we as parents sometimes put forth upon them.
