“Alright, darlin’, we’re gonna have a little chat.” The Sheriff sauntered into the room - all strut and no hurry - before tossing his hat down unceremoniously on top of the desk. He dropped into the chair across from her, the old and worn leather creaking under his weight as it settled below him. With a small jut of his chin toward the computer screen, he spoke again. From where she sat, the screen showed Rhéla’s department photo, along with what she assumed to be her full service file from Brecilian County. The Sheriff’s green eyes dropped from the monitor and met hers. “Looked up your badge number, Deputy Ghilain. And I gotta say… seems like you got a real eye for trouble, or just some nasty luck.” Those words made her feel defensive. All he had read was her file on a screen. He didn’t know her, understand her. Why she kept pushing despite the resistance. Rhéla felt it in her jaw the moment the words left his smug mouth. With a deep, slow exhale she tried to push that feeling away. The one where she wanted to snap back and hide behind her comfortably thick walls. It was hard to tell if the man was actively trying to get under her skin or not, but she was voting yes. “Just Rhéla is fine.” With a dismissive wave. Colleagues called her by her first name. Friends and family did the same with the occasional nickname. But she couldn’t think of the last time anyone used her surname. Maybe in official briefings. When she looked at him again, her eyes darted down to his self-satisfied smirk. The man looked like he was ready to drop some sort of condescending cowboy wisdom that would be infuriatingly obvious in retrospect but somehow more poignant when said with that deep Ostagar drawl. Well, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to laugh or punch him. A little bit of both, she conceded, but she went with the former. Better for her career and freedom, she supposed.
